Objective TO DEVELOP ADVANCES BORIDING TECHNIQUES FOR SINTERED MATERIALS SO AS TO IMPROVE WEAR RESISTANCE AT LOW PRODUCTION COSTS. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN FOUR PHASES: DURING THE FIRST PHASE THE CHARACTERIZATION AND ANALYSIS OF THE SURFACE AND MICROSTRUCTURAL PROPERTIES OF BORIDE COMPOUNDS AND ALLOYED AND NON-ALLOYED SINTERED STEEL AFTER BORIDING WILL BE UNDERTAKEN (24 MONTHS). THE INFLUENCE OF THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE MORE IMPORTANT ALLOYING ELEMENTS, THE DENSITY OF SINTERED MATERIALS, THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND GRAIN SIZE OF BORIDING MEDIA, THE CONDITIONS OF BORIDING, AND THE SURFACE FINISHING AFTER BORIDING WILL ALL BE STUDIED. IN ADDITION, VARIOUS CONTROL FACTORS SUCH AS HARDNESS AND MICRO-HARDNESS, METALLOGRAPHIC STRUCTURE, ROUGHNESS, AND TRIBOLOGICAL BEHAVIOUR WILL BE EXAMINED. IN PHASE 2, THE INFLUENCE OF THE BORIDING TREATMENT ON THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH OF THE SINTERED STEELS WILL BE INVESTIGATED (7 MONTHS). THE MOST SUITABLE MATERIALS, SELECTED ON THE BASIS OF THE RESULTS OF PHASE 1, WILL BE STUDIED FOR THEIR TENSILE STRENGTH AND TOUGHNESS, BEFORE AND AFTER BORIDING. FRACTOGRAPHY STUDIES WILL ALSO BE CARRIED OUT DURING THIS PHASE. TESTS ON BORIDED PRODUCTION PARTS WILL BE INITIATED DURING THIRD PHASE OF THIS PROJECT (8 MONTHS) WHICH WILL BEGIN CONCURRENTLY WITH PHASE2. AT THE SAME TIME, AN EVALUATION OF THE WORK-LIFE OF DEVELOPED PRODUCTION PARTS SUCH AS VALVE TAPPETS, PISTONS AND BUSHED WILL BE STARTED. FINALLY, IN THE LAST PHASE, AN OVERALL ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS WILL BE MADE FROM THE TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC STANDPOINT, IN ORDER TO MEET FUTURE INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS. THE INSTITUTE OF METALLURGY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA WILL PARTICIPATE IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THIS PROJECT.
