SOLUBILITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF PLATINUM-ELEMENTS IN BASE METAL SULPHIDES CONTAINED IN PGE DEPOSITS

Objetivo

LABORATORY EXPERIMENTD TO STUDY THE SOLUBILITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF PLATINIUM GROUP ELEMENTS IN BASE METAL SULPHIDES. APPLICATION TO PROSPECTING FOR PGE DEPOSITS.

THIS RESEARCH WILL BE COORDINATED WITH THAT DESCRIBED FOR CONTRACTS 023 (BRGM, ORLEANS) AND 089 (OPEN UNIVERSITY).

THE DANISH PART OF THE PROGRAMME CONSISTS OF EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF THE NATURE OF THE CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE PRINCIPAL METAL SULPHIDES AND PGE WHICH ARE OBSERVED IN THE ORE DEPOSITS.

THE LABORATORY RESEARCH WILL EXAMINE THE SOLUBILITY OF LEAST FOUR PRINCIPAL PGE (PT AND PD BEING THE MAIN ONES) IN THE BASE METAL SULPHIDES WHICH ARE IMPORTANT FOR THE PGE DEPOSITS: PYRRHOTITE/TROILITE, PYRITE, CHALCOPYRITE/HIGH TEMPERATURE CU-FE-S SOLID SOLUTION, AND PENTLANDITE.

THE TWO PRINCIPAL TEMPERATURE, 900C (RELEVANT FOR THE MAGMATIC/SUBMAGMATIC PROCESSES) AND 500C (RELEVANT FOR THE POSTMAGMATIC/PNEUMALOLYTIC PROCESSES AT WHICH ALSO CHALCOPYRYTE, PYRITE AND PENTLANDITE REPRESENT STABLE PHASES) WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY FURTHER TEMPERATURES ACCORDING TO THE SOLUBILITY CHANGES FOUND. ANNEALING OF SYNTHESIZED SOLID SOLUTIONS AT 300C SHOULD REVEAL THE EXSOLUTION PHENOMENA AT MODERATE TEMPERATURES.

THE SOLID SOLUTION FIELD OF PGE-SUBSTITUTED PYRRHORITE WILL BE DELINEATED IN DETAIL. CHARACTERISTIC COMPOSITION RANGES WILL BE EXAMINED FOR OTHER PHASES.

IN THE SECOND PART OF THIS WORK, DISTRIBUTION OF PGE AMONG COEXISTING SULPHIDE (AND ALLOY) PHASES WILL BE STUDIED.

STUDIES OF DRY CONDENSED SYSTEMS IN EVACUATED SEALED SILICA GLASS TUBES WILL REPRESENT THE PRINCIPAL EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH. ORE MICROSCOPY, X-RAY POWDER DIFFRACTION AND DETAILED MICROPROBE EXAMINATION REPRESENT THE PRINCIPAL RESEARCH METHODS.

THE EXPERIMENTALLY OBTAINED DATA WILL BE COMPARED WITH THE PGE CONCENTRATION DATA DESCRIBED FROM NATURAL SULPHIDES AND WITH THE MINERAL ASSOCIATIONS OBSERVED IN THE PGE DEPOSITS IN MAFIC AND ULTRAMAFIC ROCKS. THIS COMPARISON WILL ENABLE TO ASSES RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF EXPERIMENTALLY OBSERVED PHENOMENA IN THE FORMATION OF DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF PGE DEPOSITS AND EVENTUALLY TO DRAW NEW EXPLORATION GUIDE-LINES FOR PGE AND IMPROVE THE ECPLOITATION OF KNOWN DEPOSITS.
