CORRELATION OF GEOLOGICAL, GEOCHEMICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL DATA WITH SATELLITE IMAGERY, NORTH-CENTRAL IRELAND.

Objetivo

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO IMPROVE AND DEVELOP THE METHODS OF MULTIVARIATE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF GEOLOGICAL, GEOPHYSICAL, GEOCHEMICAL AND REMOTE SENSED DATA, WHICH WERE USED UNDER PROJECT MPP-159-81-EIR(H). THE METHODS WILL BE DEVELOPED WITHIN A 20,00 KM2 AREA OF NORTH-CENTRAL IRELAND WITH THE AIM OF LOCATING NEW PROSPECTIVE TARGETS FOR BASE METAL EXPLORATION. MULTIVARIATE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS WILL BE USED TO LOOK FOR CORRELATIONS BETWEEN DATA SETS OR DERIVATIVES] WHICH DISTINGUISH BETWEEN KNOWN MINERALISED AND UNMINERALISED AREAS. SUCCESSFUL METHODS OF MAKING SUCH A DISTINCTION WILL THEN BE APPLIED TO AREAS OF UNKNOWN MINERALISATION STATUS TO SEARCH FOR NEW PROSPECTING TARGETS.

TO ELUCIDATE THE STRUCTURAL CONTROLS OF BASE METAL MINERALISATION IN NORTH-CENTRAL IRELAND AND TO PREDICT NEW EXPLORATION TARGETS.
THE DATA TO BE USED ARE: SOLID GEOLOGY AND SUBSURFACE GEOLOGY, SUPERFICIAL DEPOSITS AND MORPHOLOGY, GROUND AND SUBSURFACE STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY, GRAVITY AND AIRBORNE MAGNETIC, SOIL GEOCHEMICAL, FRACTURE ANALYSIS FROM LANDSAT, SPOT SEASAT AND AERIEL PHOTOGRAPHS.

THE NEW STUDY AREA CONSISTS OF THE NORTHERN AND EASTERN PART OF THE CARBONIFEROUS OUTCROP AREA OF THE IRISH MIDLANDS INCLUDING A LARGE NUMBER OF BASE METAL SEPOSITS. A 3,000 KM2 AREA OF CALEDONIAN PLUTONS IN GENERATING MINERALISED DILATION ZONES ON SHEAR ZONE TERMINATIONS CAN BE ASSESSED RATHER THAN INFERRED AS IN THE PREVIOUS CONTRACT.

WHILE DATA IS BEING COMPILED AND DIGITISED, DEVELOPMENT OF STATISTICAL METHODS WILL BE CARRIED OUT USING DATA AVAILABLE FROM THE PREVIOUS CONTRACT IN THE W MIDLANDS. THIS WILL ALSO INVOLVE FOLLOW-UP STUDIES OF EXPLORATION TARGETS BEING CARRIED OUT AT AN EARLY STAGE IN THE PRESENT CONTRACT.

THE PRINCIPAL ITEMS OF EQUIPMENT WILL BE THE VICOM INTERACTIVE IMAGE PROCESSOR AND THE VAX 11/780 COMPUTER IN TRINITY COLLEGE. INTERPRETATION OF IMGERY WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN THE REMOTE SENSING LABORATOTRY TCD.

THE PROJECT WILL INVOLVE THE FOLLOWING STAGES:
1) DEVELOPMENT OF STATISTICAL METHODS
2) ACQUISITION OF NEW DATA AND PREPARATION OF CCTS
3) STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND GEOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION OF EACH DATA SET
4) MULTIVARIATE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF DATA
5) ASSESSING, RECHECKING AND REPORTING RESULTS AT END OF 2ND YEAR
6) DETAILED FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF TARGET AREAS IN COOPERATION WITH INDUSTRY(YEAR 3)
