APPRAISAL OF TRANSIENT ELECTROMAGNETIC METHOD#FOR DEEP ORE DETECTION

TO ESTABLISH OBJECTIVE SCIENTIFIC CRITERIA CONCERNING THE DETECTION CAPABILITIES OF THE TEM METHOD BY ANALOGUE SCALE MODEL STUDIES OF KNOW EEC ORE DEPOSITS, AND FIELD TRIALS.

AS FEWER NEAR SURFACE ORBEDIES REMAIN TO BE FOUND, THERE IS A NEED TO EXTEND EXPLORATION TO GREATER DEPTHS. THE TRANSIENT ELECTROMAGNETIC (TEM) METHOD HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR DEEP ORE DETECTION BY VIRTUE OF THE COMMON SOURCE-RECEIVER FIELD CONFIGURATION, AND THE FREQUENCY CONTENT OF THE SIGNAL. IT IS PROPOSED THAT A RESEARCH PROGRAMME BE UNDERTAKEN TO SPECIFICALLY INVESTIGATE THE APPLICATION OF THEM FOR DEEP ORE DETECTION.

DETECTABILITY AND RESOLUTION STUDIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT USING AN ADVANCED ANALOGUE SCALE MODEL FACILITY, WITH EXPLORATION MODELS BASED ON SELECTED EEC ORE DEPOSITS. THE STUDY WILL AIM TO PROVIDE OBJECTIVE SCIENTIFIC CRITERIA CONCERNING THE LIMITING DEPTHS OF BURIAL OF THESE TARGETS, GIVEN A SPECIFIED GEO-ELECTRIC ENVIRONMENT, TEM FOELD CONFIGURATION, AND GEOLOGIC NOISE LEVEL. TARGET DEPTH: SIZE RATIONS WILL BE INVESTIGATED TO PROVIDE CONFIDENCE LIMITS CONCERNING DISCOVERY PROBABILITY.

THE INFLUENCE OF GEOLOGIC NOISE ON DERECTION THRESHOLDS WILL BE STUDIED BY INTERPOSING GEOLOGICAL CONDUCTORS WITHIN THE APERTURE OF THE DETECTION SYSTEM. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO TEM RESPONSE ATTENUATION . AND TRANSFORMATION FOR INCREASING DEPETH OF BURIAL AND GEOLOGICAL COMPLEXITY.
THE VALIDITY OF SIGNAL RECOGNITION BASED ON SIMPLIFIED FREE SPACE RESPONSES WILL BE REVIEWED, TOGETHER WITH INTRUITIVE SURVEY DESIGN CONCEPTS.
EXPERIMENTS WILL BE DESIGNED TO EXAMINE SUPERPOSITION AND WETHER THIS PROPERTY CAN BE UTILISED FOR SIGNAL ENHANCEMENT.

FIELD TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT OVER SELECTED DEE-SEATED MINERAL DEPOSITS TO VERIFY THE OPERATIONAL AND INTERPRETATIONAL GUIDELINES ESTABLISHED.
