APPLICATION OF NEW RECOVERY TECHNIQUES TO THE SEPARATION OF FINE MINERAL PARTICLES

TO INVESTIGATE THE APPLICATION OF SURFACE PROPERTY BASED PROCESSES TO THE TREATMENT OF FINE MINERAL MIXTURES (SLIMES) AND TO COMPARE THE EFFICIENCIES OF THE DIFFERENT PROCESSES.

MINERAL SEPARATION PROCESSES USING DIFFERENCES IN PHYSICAL PROPERTIES SUCH AS DENSITY MAGNETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY ETS. FAIL TO OPERATE AT PARTICLE SIZES AROUND 10 NM.

PROCESSES BASED ON SURFACE CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF MINERALS CAN BE BROADLY DIVIDED INTO THOS INVOLVING MODIFICATION OF THE WETTING PROPERTIES OF MINERALS, E.G. FLOTATION, AND THOSE IN WHICH AGGRAGATION OF THE MINERAL PARTICLES IN OBTAINED, E.G. FLOCCULATION AND COGULATION. THE SURFACE CHEMICAL PROCESSES TO BE STUDIED IN THIS INVESTIGATION ARE:-

1) TWO-LIQUID FLOTATION : THIS PROCESS, WHICH INVOLVES THE COLLECTION OF HYDROPHOBIC PARTICLES WITH OIL DROPS, HAS BEEN APPLIED ON THE LABORATORY SCALE.

2) SELECTIVE FLOCCULATION : IN THIS PROCESSES MINERALS ARE SELECTIVELY AGGREGATED BY THE USE OF POLYELECTROLYTES OR OTHER REAGENTS.

3) OTHER POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS OF DISPERSION AND AGGREGATION.
