TREATMENT OF LOW GRADE IGNEOUS PHOSPHATE FROM THE NORTH ATLANTIC IGNEOUS PROVINCE.

Objectif

TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THERE ARE TREATABLE PHOSPHATE DEPOSITS ACCESSIBLE TO EC COUNTRIES WHICH WILL SAFEGUARD AGAINST A TEMPORARY SHORTALL IN SUPPLY OF FEEDSTOCKS TO FERTILIZER COMPLEXES.

TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THERE ARE TREATABLE PHOSPHATE DEPOSITS ACCESSIBLE TO EC COUNTRIES WHICH WILL SAFEGUARD AGAINST A TEMPORARY SHORTALL IN SUPPLY OF FEEDSTOCKS TO FERTILIZER COMPLEXES.

THE EXAMINATION OF APATITE BERAING ROCKS FROM THE NORTH ATLANTIC ALKALINE IGNEOUS PROVINCE WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN COLLABORATION WITH THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF GREENLAND AND THE INSTITUTE OF GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES, LONDON.
IN THE AREA OF THIS PROVINCE THERE ARE THREE DISTINCT APATITE ASSOCIATIONS :

1. NEPHELINE SYENITE AND PYROXENITE-APATITE MAGNETITE, SCOTLAND AND NORWAY.

2. CARBONATITES INCLUDING THEIR WEATHERED DERIVATIVES, GREENLAND.

3. ANORTHOSITE-GABBRO (EG) BJERKREM-SOGNDAL AND POLLEN-SEILAND, NORWAY.

THIS PROJECT CAN BE DIVIDED INTO (I) EXPLORATION AND (II) PROCESSING. UNDER (I) PART OF THE WORK IS PROPOSED AS A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT BETWEEN THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF GREENLAND AND THE INSTITUTE OF GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES LONDON.
UNDER (II) WARREN SPRING LABORATORY WILL ALSO COLLABORATE WITH THE ABOVE INSTITUTIONS IN CARRYING OUT LABORATORY SCALE TESTWORK.

THE FIRST STAGE OF THE WORK WILL CONSIST OF MINERALOGICAL EXAMINATION (MONDAL ANALYSES) OF THE SAMPLES WHICH WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY AND INTEGRATED WITH THE CHEMICAL AND PETROLOGICAL STUDIES PROPOSED BY THE INSTITUTE OF GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES. PARTICULAR EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED IN THIS STUDY ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF IMPURITIES WHICH ARE KNOWN TO INTERFERE WITH THE PHOSPHORIC ACID AND FERTILIZER PRODUCTION STAGES. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION ON TRACE ELEMENT CONCENTRATIONS PROVIDED BY THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF GREENLAND WILL AID CHARACTERISATION OF DIFFERENT FEED TYPES.
THE SECOND STAGE OF THE WORK WILL CONCENTRATE ON A DEFINING THE MINERAL PROCESSING TECHNIQUES THAT WILL ULTIMATELY BE REQUIRED TO TREAT EACH OF THE FEED TYPES WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF PROVIDING ACCEPTABLE CONCENTRATES FOR PHOSPHORIC ACID AND FERTILIZER MANUFACTURING PLANTS. THESE ARE EXPECTED TO INCLUDE WET SCRUBBING AND SCREENING, MAGNETIC SEPARATION, AMENABILITY TO GRAVITY SEPARATION AND EXPLOITATION OF DIFFERENCES IN SURFACE PROPERTIES TO EFFECT SEPARATION BY FLOTATION (AND SELECTIVE FLOCCULATION IF APPROPRIATE). OTHER PROCESS SUCH AS AIR CLASSIFICATION AND CALCINATION MAY BE CONSIDERED.THE RESULTS OF THESE TESTS SHOULD PERMIT CONCEPTUAL FLOWSHEETS TO BE SUGGESTED FOR EACH OF THE SAMPLES EXAMINED.
IN THE THIRD STAGE OF THE WORK CONCENTRATES PRODUCED BY THE VARIOUS UPGRADING PROCESSES WILL BE ASSESSED AT A LABORATORY SCALE. FOAM STABILITY INDICES AND REACTIVITY INDICES WILL BE DETERMINED AND COMPARAISONS MADE WITH THE INDICES OF COMMERCIALLY TREATED PHOSPHATE ROCK CONCENTRATES.
