APPLICATION OF LITHOGEOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS AND MODELS TO THE EXPLORATION OF TUNGSTEN AND ASSOCIATED ORE DEPOSITS.

Objetivo



TO IMPROVE THE EXISTING LITHOGEOCHEMICAL EXPLORATION METHODS FOR W AND OTHER ELEMENTS RELATED TO GRANITOID INTRUSIONS.
TO SELECT LITHOGEOCHEMICAL CRITERIA BY INVESTIGATING THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PARAMETERS THAT CONTROL ORE-FORMING PROCESSES AND ELEMENTS DISTRIBUTION.

LITHOGEOCHEMICAL TRACE ELEMENT ANALYSIS IN COMBINATION WITH MULTI-VARIATE STATISTICAL DATA TREATMENT PROVES TO BE AN EFFECTIVE TOOL IN DISTINGUISHING MINERALISED FROM BARREN GRANITOIDS WITH RESPECT TO W-SN-MINERALISATION. THE GEOCHEMICAL CONTOURING OF INDIVIDUAL BATHOLISTHS WILL SERVE TO OUTLINE THEIR ORE POTENTIALITIES, POSSIBLY OF A HIDDEN NATURE. THERE SEEM TO EXIST DIFFERENT PATTERNS FOR PRIMARY MAGMATIC, HIGH TEMPERATURE, METASOMATIC AND LOW-TEMPERATURE HYDROTHERMAL MINERALISATIONS.

THE RESEARCH IS A FOLLOW-UP AND INTEGRATION OF PREVIOUS STUDIES ON TUNGSTEN MINERALISATION. ITS AIM IS THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF A LITHOGEOCHEMICAL EXPLORATION METHOD WHICH IS BASED ON THE DISTRIBUTION ASPECTS OF SUITABLE (TRACE) ELEMENTS, BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CONTACT ZONES OF MINERALISED GRANITOIDS. IN ADDITION, THE MINERALOGY OF THE SKARN AND ORE DEPOSITS WILL BE STUDIED. THE RESULTS OF THE GEOCHEMICAL AND MINERALOGICAL DATA WILL BE COMBINED IN ORDER TO DEVELOP PHYSICO-CHEMICAL MODELS ON ELEMENT TRANSPORT AND FLUID-WALLROCK INTERACTION TO PROVIDE THE FRAMEWORK FOR THE INTERPRETATION OF THE DATA.

THE INTEGRATED INVESTIGATION COMPRISES:

- EMPIRICAL DETERMINATION OF DISTRIBUTION PATTERNS OF THE SO-CALLED "HYDROMAGMAPHYLE" ELEMENTS W, SN, NB, TA AND POSSIBLY U AND REE (EU) IN A NUMBER OF W-PRODUCING AND BARREN GRANITOIDS.

- ADDITIONAL STUDY OF THE ROLE OF ALKALI ELEMENTS (LI, NA, K, RB, CS) AND OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE METAL MOBILIZING ELEMENTS (F, CL, B, POSSIBLY P AND S) ON THE TRACE METAL DISTRIBUTION.

- MINERALOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE SKARN ASSEMBLAGES ASSOCIATED WITH THE ORE DEPOSITS AND THERMODYNAMIC EVALUATION OF THE CONTROLLING PARAMETERS.

- MODEL STUDIES ON THE ENERGY AND MASS TRANSFER BETWEEN "SHALLOW" INTRUSIONS AND THEIR WALL ROCKS TO ELUCIDATE THE DISPERSION PROCESSES.

A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT GRANITOIDS WILL BE STUDIED (W-PRODUCING AND BARREN), PRIMARILY IN THE PYRENEES AND COMPARED WITH INTRUSIVES IN PORTUGAL AND NORTHERN SPAIN. A CLOSE COOPERATION IS FORESEEN WITH INSTITUTES WORKING IN THESE AREAS (ECOLE DES MINES, ST. ETIENNE, UNIVERSITE DE LOUVAIN-LA-NEUVE). THE INVESTIGATION IS MAINLY DIRECTED TOWARDS THE PROBLEMS OF TUNGSTEN MINERALISATIONS, BUT THERE SHOULD ALSO BE SCOPE FOR MORE GENERAL TRENDS WHICH ARE USEFUL IN THE SEARCH FOR RELATED MINERALISATIONS SUCH AS MO, SN, OR TA.

IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT FROM THIS STUDY A CONSISTENT MODEL FOR PRACTICAL EXPLORATION WILL EVOLVE.
