THE APPLICATION OF ISOTOPIC AND TRACE ELEMENT ANALYSES OF OPHIOLITIC ROCKS AND THEIR FLUID INCLUSIONS IN THE EXPLORATION OF MASSIVE SULFIDE ORE DEPOSITS.

RECENT STUDIES ON COMPARABLE STOCKWORK MINERALISATION IN OCEAN CRUST MATERIAL FROM THE EAST PACIFIC RISE AND THE GALAPAGOS SPREADING CENTRE HAVE ALREADY IMPROVED OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE HYDROTHERMAL REACTIONS AND TRANSPORT PHENOMENA DURING THE COOLING OF THE CRUST. SINCE THE SAMPLING OF OCEANIC CRUST MATERIAL IS CONFRONTED WITH SEVERE TECHNICAL LIMITATIONS, THE MATERIAL OF THE TROODOS COMPLEX BECOMES PARTICULARY SUITED FOR THE STUDY OF THE LEACHING PROCESSES AND THE DEPOSITIONS OF SULFIDES CARRYING COPPER, LEAD, ZINC AND OTHER ASSOCIATED TRACE ELEMENTS. THE INVESTIGATIONS WILL COMPRISE: (A) A STUDY OF THE ISOTOPE COMPOSITION OF OXIGEN AND HYDROGEN IN UNALTERED AND ALTERED MINERALS; (B) ANALYSIS OF THE TRACE ELEMENTS CONTENT OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED MINERALS; (C) ANALYSIS OF THE ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION AND TRACE ELEMENT COMPOSITION OF INCLUSION FLUIDS. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO UTILISE THE DATA THUS OBTAINED TO DEVISE METHODS FOR ASCERTAINING WHETHER HIGH-TEMPERATURE WATER-ROCK INTERACTIONS HAVE OCCURRED AS THE PRE-CONDITIONS FOR THE GENSIS OF MASSIVE SULFIDE ORE DEPOSITS. THESE METHODS COULD CONCEIVABLY BE EXTENDED TO THE EXPLORATION OF OTHER ORE DEPOSITS OF THIS TYPE.
