UPGRADING OF BEECH BY LAMINATION AND IMPREGNATION TO ENSURE STABILITY-DURABILITY-ESTHETIC LOOK

THIS RESEARCH FORMS PART OF A JOINT PROJECT WITH CTIB/BELGIUM AND TNO/NETHERLANDS.

THE TI CONTRIBUTION WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:

RESEARCH BASED ON TESTSS SAMPLES DELIVERED BY CTIB. THE SAMPLES WILL BE EXPOSED TO EXTERIOR CLIMATE SIMULATING USES SUCH AS CLADDING, WINDOW JOINERY, GARDEN FURNITURE, ETC.

RESEARCH WORK WILL BE DIVIDED INTO:

A. LIAISON WITH CTIB AND TNO DURING DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROJECT.

B. STUDY OF THE PROPERTIES OF THE IMPREGNATED, STABILIZED AND LAMINATED BEECH WHEN EXPOSED OUTDOORS
- CHANGES IN MOISTURE CONTENT
- CHANGES IN DIMENSIONS
- REGISTRATION OF WEATHERING PROPERTIES
- CHANGE IN COLOUR
- SPLITTING, SURFACE CHECKING, CUP OR TWIST
- DEGRADATION OF SURFACE TREATMENTS (LACQUER, PAINT, PRESERVATIVE ETC...)
- RESISTANCE TO FUNGI-MOULD ATTACK.

C. THE STUDY OF THE MACHINING PROPERTIES OF THE TREATED BEECH IN COMPARISON WITH THE NON-TREATED ONE AND THIS IN RELATION TO QUALITY OF FINISH, CUTTING ANGLES, FEED SPEED AND BLUNTING INCL. SERVICE LIFE OF THE TOOLS.

D. PREPARATION OF REPORT.

IF CTIB WANTS A COLOUR-TREATMENT OF THE BEECH AT TI, THIS WORK WILL REPLACE POINT C, WHICH WILL BE DELETED.
