IMPROVEMENT OF WOOD UTILIZATION FROM BLACK LOCUST (ROBINIA PSEUDOACACIA) COPPICES

Objectif



A STUDY OF THE BLACK LOCUST WOOD SYSTEM WILL BE ARTICULATED IN THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH CHAPTERS: IN COOPERATION WITH AQUATER AND POLITECNICO DI TORINO.

WOOD PRODUCTION IN ORDER TO IMPROVE FOREST TREES: A SELECTION OF PROVENANCES AND MOTHER TREES WILL BE MADE FROM DIFFERENT SITES IN NORTHERN ITALY FOR COMPARISON WITH SELECTED PROVENANCES FROM ABROAD (U.S.A. HUNGARY, FRANCE, RUMANIA, YUGOSLAVIA).
IN ORDER TO IMPROVE GROWTH RATES, A STUDY WILL BE MADE OF THE ACTUAL AND POTENTIAL PRODUCTIVITY OF THE STANDS, AND A CULTIVATION MODEL SET UP FOR THE BLACK LOCUST BASED ON THE PRODUCTIVE AND PROTECTIVE FUNCTION OF THE FOREST AND ON SITE INDEX CLASSES.
THIS MODEL WILL BE USED AS A GUIDE FOR THE TENDING, THINNING AND FINAL FELLING OPERATIONS.
DURING THE SITE STUDIES THE PRESENCE AND IMPORTANCE OF SYMBIONTS, NITROGEN FIXING RHIZOBIUM AND ENDOMYCORRHIZAE WILL BE STUDIED SO AS TO ASCERTAIN THEIR POSSIBLE CORRELATION WITH THE FERTILITY AND THE TREE GROWTH.

WOOD HARVESTING, STORING AND HANDLING:AN INVENTORY WILL BE MADE OF THE MACHINERY ACTUALLY USED FOR ALL LOGGING OPERATIONS AND OF PROTOTYPES, FROM WHICH WILL BE CHOSEN THE MORE INTERESTING ONES TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THAT HARVESTING IS CARRIED OUT IN VERY SMALL PRIVATE FORESTS SINCE THIS IS THE CASE WITH BLACK LOCUST FORESTS IN ITALY. THE WEAR OF DIFFERENT MACHINERY IN DIFFERENT LOGGING CONDITIONS WILL BE TESTED, AND THEN THE ORGANIZATION OF A WORK YARD AS A FUNCTION OF DIFFERENT WAYS OF HARVESTING AND OF DIFFERENT HANDLING MACHINERY WILL BE CONSIDERED.THE WORKING TIMES WILL BE EVALUATED. THERE WILL BE MEASUREMENT AND CLASSIFICATION OF THE CUT MATERIAL AND STUDIES ON STACKING METHODS.

WOOD AS MATERIAL: A STUDY WILL BE MADE OF THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BLACK LOCUST STEMS, FORM FACTORS WEIGHT AND VOLUME PERCENTAGE OF WOOD AND BARK, AS WELL AS HISTOLOGICAL AND STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS. THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF CELLULAR WALLS AND OF EXTRACTIVES WILL BE CLOSELY EXAMINED IN VIEW OF THE UTILIZATION OF BLACK LOCUST WOOD TO MAKE GLUED LAMINATE PANELS AND PARQUETS. RESEARCH WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON WOOD DRYING (LUMBER) AND ALSO ON WOOD DEGRADATION DUE TO FUNGI,INSECTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL AGENTS. FINALLY, GASIFICATION TRIALS ARE FORESEEN IN ORDER TO UTILIZE THE SMALLER ASSORTMENTS AND THE WASTES AS FUEL.
