DETERMINATION OF THE LONG-TERM EFFECTIVENESS OF WOOD PRESERVATIVES WITH AND WITHOUT SOIL CONTACT BY ACCELERATED TEST METHODS.

Objetivo



SIGNIFICANT EVIDENCE OF THE LONG-TERM EFFECTIVENESS OF WOOD PRESERVATIVES IN TREATED WOOD IS GIVEN BY THE PRESERVATION OF ITS STRENGTH PROPERTIES, THE PERMANENCE AND SAFETY OF A CONSTRUCTION AS WELL AS BY THE EFFICIENT AND ECONOMICAL UTILISATION AND CONSERVATION OF THE RAW MATERIAL WOOD. TESTS OF PRESERVED TIMBER UNDER PRACTICAL CONDITIONS REQUIRE AN UNACCEPTABLY LONG DURATION TO COMPLETE AND ARE SUBJECT TO ACCIDENTAL ERRORS AND RISKS.

THE LONG-TERM EFFECTIVENESS OF PRESERVATIVES IN WOOD FOR EXTERIOR APPLICATIONS OUT OF SOIL CONTACT WILL BE DETERMINED IN BIOLOGICAL TESTS AFTER HAVING EXPOSED THE TREATED TIMBER TO A COMPLEX, ARTIFICIALLY ACCELERATED WEATHERING METHOD. THE SEVERITY OF THE EXPOSURE IS DETERMINED BY THE LENGTH AND SEQUENCE OF THE INDIVIDUAL CYCLES. SPECIMENS TESTED BY ACCELERATED WEATHERING WILL BE COMPARED WITH SPECIMENS WEATHERED UNDER NATURAL CONDITIONS.

WOOD PRESERVATIVES FOR USE IN SOIL CONTACT WILL BE TESTED USING STAKES PLACED IN THE FUNGUS CELLAR. BY MAINTAINING FAVOURABLE TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY CONDITIONS, AND BY USING NON-STERILE SOIL WITH A NATURAL DISTRIBUTION OF MICROORGANISMS, THE TEST PERIOD WILL BE CONSIDERABLY REDUCED COMPARED WITH OUTDOOR STAKE TESTS. EVALUATION OF THE TEST SPECIMENS WILL BE MADE AT 6-MONTHLY INTERVALS BY BENDING TESTS.
