Obiettivo IN ECONOMIC TERMS THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE EFFICIENCY OF EXTRACTION AND-OR RECOVERY OF THE PLATINUM GROUP METALS AND THE PRECIOUS METALS HAS OBVIOUS POTENTIAL. IT WILL RESULT IN A REMARKABLE REDUCTION IN PLANT CAPITAL COST AND AN IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALL PROCESS EFFICIENCY. Research has been carried out to develop routes to highefficiency ion exchange resins which would perform much better than currently available materials in terms of their high metal ion capacity, fast exchange kinetics and metal ion selectivity.Particular areas studied have been:the synthesis of novel ion exchange and chelating resins with good compatibility with aqueous feeds and appropriate engineering properties;the examination of the ability of these resins to extract metal ions selectively in a batch process, attention being focussed on precious metals and platinum group metals;consideration of the potential of the new systems for scale up and application.Resins developed for platinum and palladium extraction have not been successful. However, the resins for gold extraction present significant advantages over current technologies as they show high achievable loadings, fast extraction and complete stripping behaviour.THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO DEVELOP A NEW GENERATION OF ION EXCHANGE AND CHELATING RESINS CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING HIGH METAL ION SELECTIVITY, HIGH CAPACITY, FAST LOADING KINETICS AND FAST QUANTITATIVE ELUTION OF CAPTURED METAL IONS. THE NOBLE METALS AND THE PLATINUM GROUP METALS ARE THE IMPORTANT TARGETS. THE NEW RESINS WILL BE PRODUCED BY ATTACHMENT OF APPROPRIATE ION EXCHANGE GROUPS LIGANDS TO STRUCTURALLY PURE PRECURSOR MONOMERS, FOR CONVERSION TO OR INCORPORATION INTO CAREFULLY TAILORED POLYMER MATRICES. THE RESEARCH WILL INCLUDE PRODUCTION, TESTING AND OPTIMIZATION OF RESINS AND EXTRACTION COLUMNS.
