DESIGN & EVALUATION OF LARGE CONTAINERS FOR REACTOR DECOMMISSIONING WASTE.

Objective

THE SYSTEM STUDY CARRIED OUT UNDER THE FIRST FIVE-YEARS PROGRAMME, LED TO THE EVOLUTION OF DESIGN CONCEPTS OF TYPE B AND LOW SPECIFIC ACTIVITY (LSA) TRANSPORT CONTAINERS AND TO AN EVALUATION FOR THE NUMBER OF CONTAINERS REQUIRED TO TRANSPORT DECOMMISSIONING WASTE FROM A PRESSURISED OR BOILING WATER REACTOR, AS WELL AS THE ASSOCIATED TRANSPORT COSTS AND RADIOLOGICAL DETRIMENT.

THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO CHECK THE DESIGN CONCEPTS IN RELATION TO THE INFLUENCE OF MANUFACTURE, HANDLING AND DISPOSAL ON DESIGN AND TRANSPORT HAZARDS. THE EXAMINATION OF TRANSPORT HAZARDS WILL LEAD TO THE IDENTIFICATION OF APPROPRIATE PACKAGE PERFORMANCE.
The design of large transport containers for intermediate level reactor decommissioning waste (ie waste which requires shielding) was investigated with regard to European requirements (ie for both light water reactors (LWR) and gas cooled reactors). A design methodology for such containers covering the whole lifetime of a waste disposal package was proposed. The design methodology presented takes account of various relevant constraints. Both large self shielded and returnable shielded concepts were developed. The work was generic, rather than specific. The results obtained, and the lessons learned, remain to be applied in practice.

B.6. QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF PROPOSED CONCRETE AND STEEL PACKAGE DESIGN CONCEPTS USING SIMPLE COMPUTER-AIDED METHODS, AND REVISION OF THE ORIGINAL CONCEPTS IF NECESSARY.
