ECOSYSTEM RESEARCH IN FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEM RECOVERY: REVERSIBILITY OF EUTROPHICATION.

Objective

TO INVESTIGATE ECOLOGY-BASED METHODOLOGIES FOR THE RECOVERY OF LAKES FROM EUTROPHICATION.

BASED ON TWO SUCCESSFUL, BUT SEPARATE PROJECTS IN 3RD ENVIRONMENTAL R&D PROGRAMME (LOOSDRECHT LAKES PROJECT IN THE NETHERLANDS, AND THE BIOMANIPULATION PROJECT IN ITALY) A JOINT EUROPEAN EFFORT HAS NOW BEEN STARTED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE ECOSYSTEM DYNAMICS IN LAKES SUCH AS TO PREDICT RESPONSES TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES, IN PARTICULAR AS REGARDS THE RECOVERY OF (MOSTLY SHALLOW) LAKES FROM EUTROPHICATION. THE RESEARCH IS FOCUSSING ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN VARIOUS TROPHIC LEVELS IN THESE FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS IN ORDER TO USE BIOMANIPULATION AS A WATER MANAGEMENT TOOL.

FOR THIS APPROACH FIELD STUDIES, LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, MESOCOSM STUDIES AS WELL AS WHOLE LAKE EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED.
RELATION BETWEEN SEVERAL TROPHIC LEVELS WILL BE STUDIED IN EXPERIMENTAL PONDS BY MANIPULATING THE FISH STOCK. IT WILL LEAD TO A CARBON BUDGET FOR THE LAKE AND TO THE PREPARATION OF A WHOLE LAKE EXPERIMENT.
