Objectif DEVELOPEMENT OF MODELS DESIGNED TO PREDICT WATER AND SALT MOVEMENT PATTERNS. ELABORATION AND TESTING OF ALTERNATIVE TILLAGE AND IRRIGATION PRACTICES. THE IRRIGATED AREA OF LAS MARISMAS IN SOUTH-WESTERN SPAIN ENCOMPASSES SOME 50,000 HA OF RECLAIMED SOILS. A SALINE WATER TABLE AND THE PECULIAR NATURE OF THE SOILS POSE A THREAT TO A LONG SUSTAINABLE IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE IN THE AREA. IN RECENT YEARS, ZONES WITHIN LAS MARISMAS HAVE HAD DECLINING CROP PRODUCTIVITY AND INCREASED SALINITY PROBLEMS. DAGRADATION OF SOIL STRUCTURE, STOPPAGE OF THE LEACHING PROCESS AND MALFUNCTIONING OF THE DRAINAGE NETWORKS AREA EVER-INCREASING PROBLEMS WHICH AFFECT THE QUALITY OF SOILS IN THE AREA. IN ADDITION, THE INTENSE AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITY IN THE RECLAIMED AREA ENDANGERS THE ECOSYSTEM OF THE NEARBY NATURAL PARK COTO DE DONNA.
