THE INFLUENCE OF CHRONIC EXPOSURES OF PLANTS TO OZONE, SULPHUR DIOXIDE AND NITROGEN OXIDE AND THEIR PREDISPOSITION TO WATER STRESS, FROST AND PHYTOPATHOGENIC FUNGI

TO GENERATE SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION IN ORDER TO ELUCIDATE TO WHAT EXTENT ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITING FACTORS MODIFY THE PLANT RESPONSE TO AIR POLLUTANTS.

UNDER CONTROLLED AND REPRODUCTIBLE CONDITIONS IN CLIMATIC CHAMBERS, AND IN AN OPEN TOP UNIT FUMIGATION EXPERIMENTS WITH CHRONIC EXPOSURES TO 03, SO2 AND NO2, SINGLY AND IN COMBINATION, WILL BE CARRIED OUT. IF CORRELATED WITH FIELD EXPERIMENTS IN THE SO2 ACCENTUATED FICHTEL GEBIRGE AND IN THE O3 ACCENTUATED SOUTHERN BLACK FOREST, THE RESULTS MAY HELP TO EXPLAIN THE INFLUENCES OF THE POLLUTANTS MENTIONED ABOVE ON THE INTERRELATIONS BETWEEN PLANT, PATHOGENICS AND CLIMATICAL STRESS.

INFLUENCED BY AIR POLLUTANTS AND BY BOTH BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC STRESS, THE VITALITY OF THE TEST PLANTS - PINTO BEAN (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS), SPINACH (SPINACEA OLERACEA) AND SPRUCE (PICEA ABIES KARST.) - WILL BE ANALYSED USING THE FOLLOWING RESPONSE CRITERIA :
-DIAGNOSIS OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND RESPIRATION
-DETERMINATION OF THE REDUCTION EQUIVALENTS NAD, NADH, NADP, NADPH2
-DETERMINATION OF THE NUCLEOTIDS ATP, ADP, AMP TO MEASURE THE ENERGY BALANCE OF THE PLANT
-DETERMINATION OF THE PROTEIN, CARBOHYDRATE AND PIGMENT CONTENTS
-DETERMINATION OF THE ACTIVITY OF THE ENZYMES PEROXIDASE AND ACID PHOSPHATASE
