RESEARCH ON CONTINUOUS AND INSTANTANEOUS HEAVY GAS CLOUDS

TO PROVIDE EXTENDED MTEHODS WHETHER NUMERICAL OR PHYSICAL
TO PREDICT THE BEHAVIOUR OF HEAVY GAS CLOUDS.

THE FIRST PART OF THE WORK AT SRD WILL BE TO WRITE A REVIEW OF EXISTING INFORMATION ON HEAVY-GAS DISPERSION PAST OBSATCLES AND ON RELEVANT GEOPHYSICAL FLOWS, TO BRING UP TO DATE THE REVIEW CARRIED OUT BY BRITTER FOR HSE IN 1982. THE EMPHASIS WILL BE ON IDENTIFYING THE BASIC PHYSICAL PROCESSES AT WORK AND DISTILLING THE EXPERIMENTAL INFORMATION INTO SIMPLE OVERALL MATHEMATICAL MODELS INCORPORATING THAT PHYSICAL UNDERSTANDING. THUS DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS WILL BE IMPORTANT IN RELATING CONDITIONS IN DIFFERENT SETS OF EXPERIMENTS AND COMPARING THEIR RESULTS.
THIS REVIEW WILL ALSO MATCH THIS INFORMATION AGAINST THE NEEDS FOR HAZARD ASSESSMENT, FIRST BY ESTABLISHING A CATALOGUE OF STANDARD GEOMETRIES WHICH CAN BE HANDLED BY THESE METHODS (EG TWO-DIMENSIONAL FENCES, REGULAR ARRAYS OF ROUGHNESS ELEMENTS) AND SECONDLY BY ESTABLISHING WHETHER THE SIMPLE MODELS OF OBSTACLE EFFECTS WILL MAKE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE TO TYPICAL FLAT-GROUND PREDICTIONS. EXPERIMENTS NEEDED TO REMEDY GAPS IN THE DATABASE WILL BE RECOMMENDED TO THE COLLABORATING ORGANISATIONS.
THE SECOND PART OF THE WORK AT SRD WILL BE TO ESTABLISHED WAYS OF INCORPORATING THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTS INTO EXISTING SIMPLE MATHEMATICAL MODELS OF HEAVY-GAS DISPERSION. THIS WILL INITIALLY CONCENTRATE ON EXTENDING STEADY PLUME MODELS TO NATURAL TOPOGRAPHY, SUCH AS TRANSVERSE SLOPES AND RIDGES, AND LOGITUDINAL VALLEYS. ARTIFICIAL OBSTACLES WILL PROBABLY BE REPRESENTED BY DISCONTINUITIES IN THE PLUME, IN A SIMILAR MANNER TO WATER-SPRAY CURTAINS ALREADY INCORPORATED IN SOME MODELS.
