Obiettivo TESTING OF THE HYPOTHESIS THAT ACID PRECIPITATION INCLUDING NITROGEN DEPOSITION HAS A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON ECTOMYCORRHIZAS AND THEREBY ON THE VITALITY OF FOREST TREES. IT IS PROPOSED TO STUDY THIS HYPOTHESIS IN THE FIELD AS WELL AS IN THE LABORATORY: IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE NETHERLANDS PLOTS WILL BE SELECTED IN FORESTS, WHICH WILL BE STUDIED DURING SEVERAL YEARS. THE SELECTION WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN CLOSE COOPERATION WITH THE STATE FOREST SERVICE AND WITH OTHER PARTICIPANTS IN THE ACID RAIN PROGRAMME. THE PROPOSED STUDY INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS: A. FIELD WORK IN PERMANENT PLOTS: 1. THE RELATION BETWEEN (A) THE ABUNDANCE AND SPECIES COMPOSITION OF THE ABOVE GROUND MYCOFLORA AND (B) THE ABUNDANCE AND DIFFERENTIATION OF MYCORRHIZA IN THE SOIL. 2. THE RELATION BETWEEN (A) AND (B) AND (C) THE VITALITY OF THE TREES. 3. THE RELATION BETWEEN (A), (B) AND (C) AND THE LOCAL AMOUNTS OF ACID PRECIPITATION AND NITROGEN INPUT. B. EXPERIMENTAL WORK: 4. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF VARIOUS IMPORTANT MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI FOR THE GROWTH AND VITALITY OF TREES. 5. THE INFLUENCE OF PH AND AVAILABLE NITROGEN ON THE GROWTH OF MYCELIA OF VARIOUS MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI AND ON THE GROWTH AND VITALITY OF TREES.
