EFFECTS OF ACID PRECIPITATION ON LAKE ECOSYSTEMS IN N-W ITALIAN AREA

Obiettivo

ASSESSMENT OF EFFECTS OF PRECIPITATION LOADS ON FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS IN ALPINE AND SUBALPINE AREAS.

PREVIOUS RESEARCH RESULTS ON THE ACIDIFICATION OF PRECIPITATION IN THE N-W ITALIAN SUBALPINE AREA DEMONSTRATED A DECREASE OF RAIN WATER ACIDITY WITH INCREASING ALTITUDES. THE YEARLY MEAN PH OF PRECIPITATION RANGES BETWEEN 4.2 AND 4.5 AT ALTITUDES OF 300-900 M AND SHOWING HIGHEST VALUES IN THE ALPINE REGION AT 2200 M.

THIS RESEARCH PROGRAMME WILL MEASURE AND COMPARE THE VARIOUS EFFECTS OF THE PECIPITATION LOADS ON SUBALPINE AND ALPINE LAKES. IN THE SUBALPINE AREA THE LAKES LAGO MAGGIORE, LAGO MERGOZZO AND LAGO ORTA WILL BE CONSIDERED IN PARTICULAR BECAUSE OF THEIR DIFFERENCES IN WATER CHEMISTRY. IN THE ALPINE REGION LAKES OF LOW BUFFERING CAPACITY WILL BE CHOSEN FOR THIS PROJECT.
