SHORT AND LONG- TERM EFFECTS OF ACID PRECIPITATION ON THE CO2 - EXCHANGE OF PICEA ABIES KARST

Objetivo

TO HIGHLIGHT THE NON-VISIBLE EFFECTS DUE TO ACID RAIN ON TREES, ESPECIALLY ON PICEA ABIES KARST.

THE EFFECT OF GASEOUS POLLUTANTS ON PLANTS (DRY DEPOSITION) PRIMARILY SO2, NOX, AND 03, IS WELL DOCUMENTED, SYNERGISM AND THE INFLUENCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE STUDIED. THE MOST CONSISTENT PLANT RESPONSE TO SO2 IS PHOTOSYNTHETIC INHIBITION, WHICH IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE PHTOSYNTHESIS IS THE DRIVING FORCE FOR BIOMASS PRODDUCTION. GENERALLY SPEAKING, DECIDUOUS PLANTS AND SPECIES WITH A HIGH INTRINSIC PHOTOSYNTHETIC CAPACITY ARE MORE SENSITIVE. LESS IS KNOWN ABOUT THE DIRECT IMPACT OF ACID PRECIPITATION (WET DEPOSITION OF SO2, OXIDIZED TO SO4 2-) ON PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESS, E.G. GAS EXCHANGE. YET, WET DEPOSITION IS A SIGNIFICANT PROPORTION OF TOTAL SULPHUR INPUT TO VEGETATIONS, ESPECIALLY IN RURAL AREAS AT SOME DISTANCE FROM THE POLLUTANT SOURCE. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS FOCUSED ON THE EXAMINATION OF THE EFFECTS OF A SINGLE POLLUTION FACTOR (ACID PRECIPITATION) ON A SINGLE ECOLOGICAL PROCESS (PHOTOSYNTHESIS) OF AN ECONOMICAL SPECIES UNDER CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS.

FINALLY, THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OF LEAF CO2-EXCHANGE PATTERNS WILL BE USED IN A CANOPY CO2-EXCHANGE MODEL (ALREADY DEVELOPED AT THE LAB). THIS MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO EVALUATE THE IMPORTANCE OF SHORT - AND LONG- TERM REDUCTION AND RECOVERY OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS FOR BIOMASS PRODUCTION, AND TO ESTIMATE POTENTIAL YIELD LOSS.
