THE INFLUENCE OF DISPERSANTS ON THE FATE AND EFFECTS OF OIL IN MODEL TIDAL FLAT ECOSYSTEMS

Cel

ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTS OF OIL POLLUTION AND DISPERSANTS ON THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING OF MARINE ECOSYSTEMS USING ENCLOSURE TECHNIQUES.

FORMER EXPERIMENTS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE CONTRACT ENV-814-NL HAVE SHOWN THAT ADDITIONAL STRESS BY LOW TEMPERATURES MAY RESULT IN UNEXPECTED EFFECTS ON TIDAL FLAT ECOSYSTEMS, PRESTRESSED BY OIL AND/OR DISPERSANTS.

DURING THE SHORT TERM PROJECT EXTENSION (6 MONTHS) IT IS INTENDED TO CONFIRM FORMER RESULTS ON THE EFFECTS OF WINTER TEMPERATURES ON THE RECOVERY OF PHYTOPLANKTON, ZOOPLANKTON, PHYTOBENTHOS, MEIOFAUNA, MACROFAUNA AND BACTERIA UNTIL MAY 1985.

APART FROM THIS, THE APPLICATION OF EXISTING MATHEMATICAL MODELS TO SIMULATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF TIDAL FLAT ECOSYSTEMS WILL BE STARTED. ACTUALLY, THE KREMER AND NIXON MODEL ON NARROGANSETT BAY AND THE NIOZ MODEL ON THE EMS-DOLLART ESTUARY WILL BE TESTED FOR ADEQUATE ADAPTATION.
