STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING NITRATES AND HEAVY METALS IN RIVER SYSTEMS

Objective

EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE THE WATER QUALITY OF MULTI REACH RIVER SYSTEM.

BASED ON AVAILABLE MATHEMATICAL MODELS ON WATER QUALITY OF RIVERS, DEVELOPED UNDER CONTRACT ENV-400-80-UK (B), THE RESEARCH PROJECT WILL USE THESE MODELS TO INVESTIGATE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR POLLUTION CONTROL IN LARGE MULTI-TRIBUTARY, MULTI-REACH RIVER SYSTEMS.

THE PROJECT CONSISTS OF TWO STAGES:

1) MANAGING NITRATE IN RIVER SYSTEMS

USE OF MATHEMATICAL MODELS TO INVESTIGATE THE OPTIMAL MIX OF ALTERNATIVES FOR A REDUCTION OF NITRATES IN RIVERS, AND TO APPLY THE TECHNIQUES IN THE FIRST INSTANCE TO THE THAMES AND THE BEDFORD OUSE.

2) MANAGING HEAVY METALS IN RIVER SYSTEMS

EXTENSION OF THE FLOW AND QUALITY MODELS OF A RIVER SYSTEM TO HEAVY METALS AND INVESTIGATION OF THE MINIMUM COST STRATEGIES FOR MEETING EEC STANDARDS.
