ACCELERATED TECHNIQUES FOR PREDICTING THE MOVEMENT OF CONTAMINANTS IN SOIL

CONTAMINED URBAN LAND IS A WIDESPREAD RELICT OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTN AND OFTEN HAS BE RECLAIMED BY COVERING WITH CLEAN SO I.

EVIDENCE IT TO HAND TO SHOW THAT THE USE OF CLAY MATERIALS MAY LEAD TO THE UPWARD MIGRATION OF CONTAMINANTS, THROUGH THE SOIL COVER, IN DROUGHT SUMMERS.

IT IS PROPOSED TO CONFIRM THIS EFFECT AND TO EXAMINE WHETHER IT AFFECTS COMMON CLAY MATERIALS. BY CAREFULLY MONITORING SOIL PHYSICAL FACTORS, IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE TO REFINE THE AGRICULTURAL MODELS FOR UPWARD MOISTURE FLOW THROUGH SOILS, AND TO PRODUCE AN ANALYTICAL METHOD SUITABLE FOR COMPUTER ANALYSIS OF PROPOSED "IN SITU" SOIL TREATMENTS.

THE EXPERIMENTS WILL BE LARGELY CARRIED OUT IN THE ENHANCED TEMPERATURES OF GREENHOUSES AND WILL THUS BE ACCELERATED, COMPARED TO THE MORE USUAL FIELD-CROP TRIAL METHOD.
