ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF VARIOUS SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL METHODS.

Objective

TO ASSESS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF VARIOUS SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL METHODS.

THE PROJECT CONSISTS OF FOUR MAIN PARTS:

1) A DETAILED EXAMINATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL IS CARRIED OUT, THROUGH CASE STUDIES, FOR THE FOLLOWING PRACTICES: LANDFILL; INCINERATION; WASTE TREATMENT; RECOVERY AND RECYCLING. DIFFERENT TYPES OF IMPACT E.G. SOIL POLLUTION, GROUNDWATER POLLUTION, NOISE, ETC. ARE CONSIDERED.

2) ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS ON POSSIBLE AFTER-USE OF LANDFILL SITES ARE EXAMINED.

3) A DESK-STUDY IS UNDERTAKEN TO ASSEMBLE AND INTERPRET AVAILABLE INFORMATION ON THE OVERALL EFFECTS OF THE DIFFERENT TYPE OF PRACTICES MENTIONNED ABOVE. THE INFORMATION CONSIDERED INCLUDES DETAILS OF RELEVANT PLANS AND POLICIES WITHIN MEMBER STATES.

4) THE RESULTS OF THE ABOVE PARTS ARE USED TO DRAW UP RECOMMENDATIONS ON MEASURES THAT COULD BE RELEVANT TO THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE IN MINIMIZING THE OVERALL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL.
