Objetivo TO ELUCIDATE THE MECHANISMS OF ACTION OF VARIOUS HEAVY METALS ON THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM AND TO INVESTIGATE SYNERGISMS AND/OR ANTAGONISMS IN EFFECTS. /THE FOLLOWING EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS ARE INVESTIGATED: 1) PB+CO: THE INTERACTION OF LOW LEVELS OF LEAD CARBON MONOXIDE ARE FOLLOWED IN NEW-BORN RATS, WHOSE MOTHERS HAD BEEN GIVEN LEAD FOR 60 DAYS PRIOR TO PREGNANCY, THROUGHOUT PREGNANCY AND FOR 90 DAYS AFTER BIRTH. CO IS ADMINISTERED CONTINUOUSLY THROUGHOUT THE PREGNANCY; 2) PB+CD: THE INTERACTION OF LEAD AND CADMIUM IS STUDIED IN RATES; 3) JUVENILE MONKEYS ARE EXPOSED TO LEAD LEVELS; 4) THE POTENTIAL BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF ZINC IS STUDIED IN RATS GIVEN HIGH DOSES OF LEAD; 5) RATS EXPOSED TO LOW DOSES OF LEAD FROM BIRTH UNTIL LATE ADULTHOOD. AFTER SACRIFICE, A NUMBER OF UNTRASTRUCTURAL, MORPHOMETRICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS ARE STUDIED.
