Objective ASSESSMENT OF THE FATE OF OIL POLLUTION AT SEA.IN THE PRECEDING CONTRACT, ENV-402-UK(N), RESEARCH WAS CARRIED OUT ON THE RATES OF EVAPORATION, WATER ABSORPTION TO FORM WATER-IN-OIL EMULSIONS, VISCOSITY INCREASE AND RESPONSE TO DISPERSANTS OVER THE FIRST 24 HOURS OF A CONTROLLED OIL SPILL AT SEA. THIS PROJECT IS DIRECTED TO ESTABLISH THE RATES OF DISPERSION OF "MOUSSE" AT SEA FOR CRUDE OILS COMMONLY TRANSPORTED TO PARTS OF THE COMMUNITY. "ENVIRONMENTAL RINGS" OF 5 M DIAMETER, FREE FLOATING ON THE SEA, ARE USED. THE SEAWATER SURFACE INBETWEEN THE RINGS WILL BE TREATED WITH SMALL AMOUNTS OF OIL (CA. 10 L) TO SIMULATE A REALISTIC OIL FILM THICKNESS. THE RATES OF DISAPPEARANCE OF OIL WILL BE RELATED TO THE SEA STATE, TEMPERATURE AND OIL TYPE. A COMPLEMENTARY LABORATORY PROGRAMME WILL - GENERATE COMPARABLE CONDITIONS IN THE LABORATORY TO PREDICT RATES OF DISPERSION, WHICH WILL BE CORRELATED WITH THE SEA TRUTH DATA - INVESTIGATE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURAL MOUSSE AND LABORATORY PRODUCED MATERIAL AND APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED TO THE DEMULSIFICATION OF MOUSSE - DEVISE A PRACTICAL TEST TO PREDICT THE PERFORMANCE OF COMMERCIAL OIL DEMULSIFIERS ON MOUSSE.
