THE EFFECTS OF LEAD EXPOSURE ON PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST PERFORMANCE AND THEIR RELATION TO BIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS

Objective

TO EXAMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF LEAD ABSORPTION.

THE VARIOUS BIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF LEAD ABSORPTION ARE SYSTEMATICALLY SAMPLED IN NEW ENTRANTS TO LEAD WORK OVER A PERIOD OF SIX MONTHS FROM ENTRY.

THE BIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS EXAMINED INCLUDE HAEM PRECURSORS IN THE BLOOD AND URINE, MAXIMUM MOTOR CONDUCTION VELOCITIES OF THE PERIPHERAL NERVES AND SERUM-BIOPTERIN LEVELS, ALL OF WHICH ARE KNOWN OR SUSPECTED TO BE INFLUENCED BY LEAD EXPOSURE.

THE PSYCOLOGICAL PARAMETERS EXAMINED COMPRISE THREE OF THE MAJOR COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS I.E. MEMORY, ATTENTION AND VERBAL SKILLS.

THIS SIMULTANEOUS STUDY OF BOTH BIOLOGICAL AND PSYCOLOGICAL PARAMETERS ALLOWS THE DETERMINATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE INDICES, AND OF ANY CHANGES OVER TIME.
EXISTING CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDIES DO NOT PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE TERMPORAL PARAMETERS OF ANY CHANGES.
