Objectif TO ESTABLISH WHETHER AND HOW THE CARDIOVASCULAR EFFECTS OF CERTAIN HEAVY METALS ARE LINKED TO PERTURBATIONS OF ESSENTIAL TRACE METAL METABOLISM. MALE AND FEMALE RATS AND MALE RABBITS ARE EXPOSED OVER A PERIOD OF 5-15 MONTHS, TO LEAD, CADMIUM, LEAD AND CADMIUM, ORGANIC OR INORGANIC MERCURY AND TRIVALENT OR PENTAVALENT ARSENIC. AT THE END OF EACH EXPERIMENT 24-HOUR URINE IS COLLECTED TO DETERMINE PROTEINS, CATECHOL-AMINES AND IRINARY KALLIKREIN ACTIVITY. FOR CARDIOVASCULAR DETERMINATIONS, THE SYSTEMIC BLOOD PRESSURE (B.P.) B.P. MAXIMUM RATE OF RISE, HEART RATE AND A STANDARD LIMB II ELECTROCARDIOGRAM ARE CONTINUOUSLY MONITORED. THE EFFECTS OF EPINEPHRINE, MOREPINEPHRINE, ANGOSTENSIN I AND II, HEXAMETONIUM AND/OR OTHER VASCOACTIVE SUBSTANCES, AND THE EFFECT OF VAGOTOMY, ON THE ABOVE CARDIOVASCULAR PARAMETERS ARE DETERMINED. THE METALS ARE EXAMINED IN INDIVIDUAL ORGANS BY SCANNING AND/OR MICROFLUORIMETRIC TECHNIQUES AND BY HISTOPATHOLOGICAL METHODS.
