Objective TO ELUCIDATE ANY POSSIBLE CAUSAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CADMIUM EXPOSURE AND HYPERTENSION IN MAN. THE STUDY WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON A NUMBER OF PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM HYPERTENSION AND UNDERGOING DIAGNOSTIC EXAMINATIONS IN HOSPITAL. THE CONTROL GROUP CONSISTS OF NORMOTENSIVE SUBJECTS COMPARABLE IN AGE, LIFE HABITS AND OCCUPATION TO THE FORMER GROUP. CADMIUM LEVELS IN BLOOD, URINE AND HAIR WILL BE DETERMINED IN MEMBERS OF EACH GROUP BY FLAMELESS ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTRO-PHOTOMETRY. THE LEVELS OF ZINC AND COPPER WILL ALSO BE DETERMINED IN THE SAME SAMPLES, AS INTERACTIONS WITH CADMIUM HAVE BEEN REPORTED. IN BOTH GROUPS, LEVELS OF PLASMA RENIN, OF URINE KALLIKREIN AND OF SOME ZINC-DEPENDENT ENZYMES WILL ALSO BE MEASURED, TO ELUCIDATE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION, THE CONCENTRATIONS OF THE ABOVE METALS AND BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS.
