VIRUSES IN WATERS AND SOILS: CHARACTERISATION AND BEHAVIOUR, ADSORPTION, MIGRATION, INACTIVATION

Objective

TO STUDY THE BEHAVIOUR OF VIRUSES IN SOIL AND THE SUBSEQUENT RISK FOR THE CONTAMINATION OF NATURAL WATERS.

FROM TECHNIQUES ELABORATED DURING THE FIRST PERIOD OF THE STUDY (CONTRACT ENV-318-F) AND BY USING TRACER TECHNIQUES (14C, 32P), THE EVOLUTION OF ENTERIC VIRUSES IN SOILS, AFTER WASTE WATER OR SEWAGE SLUDGE SPREADING IS INVESTIGATED WITH A SPECIAL OUTLOOK ON WATER CONTAMINATION..

THE ADSORPTION-DESORPTION CYCLE OF VIRUS ON THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF A SOIL WILL BE EXAMINED BY USING, IN A FIRST STEP, ATTENUATED LABELLED POLIOVIRUS. CONCLUSIONS REACHED WILL BE CORROBORATED WITH ONE OR TWO VIRUSES OF DIFFERENT TYPES AND ESPECIALLY WITH A "WILD" VIRUS.

THEN, ON SOIL PROFILES ARTIFICIALLY CONSTITUTED, AND WITH WASTE WATER OR COVERED WITH SLUDGES, BOTH ENRICHED WITH LABELLED VIRUSES, AND PLACED IN THE CONDITIONS OF LIXIVIATION BY RAIN OR BY IRRIGATION WATER, THE RETENTION, MIGRATION AND INACTIVATION OF VIRUSES WILL BE STUDIED. THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOILS WILL BE EXAMINED. VARIOUS CONSTITUTIVE PARAMETERS OF SOIL AND OF PERCOLATED WATER WILL SUCCESSIVELY BE CONSIDERED.
