IN SITU AND LABORATORY MEASUREMENT OF THE BUFFERING EFFECT OF SEA WATER AS A REGULATOR OF ATMOSPHERIC CO2 CONTENT.

Objective

ASSESSMENT OF THE REGULATION OF THE ATMOSPHERIC CO2 CYCLE.

THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME COMPRISES TWO MAIN PARTS:

1) LABORATORY RESEARCH ON THE CO2 CYCLE, COVERING

- THE SPECIATION OF CARBONIC ACID DERIVATIVES IN SEA WATER SOLUTION AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE, INITIAL PH VALUE, PRESSURE AND THE DEGREE OF CA-MG CARBONATE SATURATION;

- THE SOLUBILITY OF PARTICULATE CARBONATES OF BIOLOGICAL ORIGIN IN SEA WATER;

- DIRECT MEASUREMENT OF THE BUFFERING CAPACITY OF SEA WATER.

2) IN SITU RESEARCH ON:

- PH AND ALCALINITY PROFILES IN THE MIXING LAYER OF THE OCEAN (+/- 300M)
- SPECIATION OF BICARBONATES AND CARBONATES
- INFLUENCE OF THE PHOTOSYNTHESIS OF POSIDONIA POPULATIONS ON THE CO2 TRANSFER.
