Cel THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP IMPROVED CATALYSTS FOR THE SLURRY-PHASE HYDROGENATION OF COAL-DERIVED LIQUIDS. PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP EFFICIENT CATALYSTS FOR THE SLURRY-PHASE HYDROGENATION OF HIGHLY UNSATURATED AROMATIC COMPOUNDS. THESE CATALYSTS WILL COMBINE THE HIGH ACTIVITY OF METALS WITH THE HIGH POISONING RESISTANCE OF METAL SULFIDES. THE METHODOLOGY INVOLVED APPROPRIATE MODIFICATIONS OF THE CHEMICAL, ELECTRONIC, AND GEOMETRIC STRUCTURE OF METALLIC SURFACES. SUCH ALTERATIONS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY ELECTRONIC-TYPE METAL-SUPPORT INTERACTIONS, INDUCED BY ALTERVALENT DOPING OF SEMICONDUCTING SUPPORT MATERIALS, BY ALLOYING ACTIVE METAL SURFACES WITH INACTIVE FOREIGN ATOMS. THE EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND METHODOLOGY INVOLVE PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MONOMETALLIC AND BIMETALLIC CATALYSTS ON CONVENTIONAL AND NONCONVENTIONAL SUPPORTS SUCH AS TI0, DOPED WITH IONS OF LOWER AND HIGHER VALENCE.HYDROGENATION ACTIVITY OF THESE CATALYSTS WILL BE DETERMINED IN A THREE-PHASE SLURRY REACTOR WITH MODEL COMPOUNDS SUCH AS BENZENE, BIPHENYL AND NAPHTHALENE, WITH SYNTHETIC COAL LIQUIDS AND WITH REAL COAL LIQUIDS. THE SULFUR POISONING CHARACTERISTICS OF SELECTED CATALYSTS WILL ALSO BE DETERMINED BY ADDITION OF TIOPHENE IN THE REACTION MIXTURE. KINETIC EXPERIMENTS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN THE TEMPERATURE RANGE OF 300 TO 450 CELSIUS DEGREES AND AT HYDROGEN PRESSURES IN THE RANGE OF 50 TO 100 ATM.
