PASSIVE BUILDING CONTROL.

THE OBJECTIVE IS THE REALIZATION OF THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONTROLLERS FOR PASSIVE SOLAR SYSTEMS IN DWELLINGS AND BUILDINGS. THE DESIGN OF THESE CONTROLLERS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN A CONCERTED ACTION, IN WHICH EACH OF THE PARTICIPANTS, TU DELFT, ARMINES AND NAPAC, WILL DESIGN ONE OF THESE CONTROL SYSTEMS. THE STUDY OF WHICH ARMINES IS RESPONSIBLE WILL BE PARTLY CARRIED OUT IN JOINT COLLABORATION WITH CSTB (CENTRE SCIENTIFIQUE ET TECHNIQUE DU BATIMENT).

DIGITAL CONTROL SYSTEMS ARE PROPOSED FOR THE INDOOR CLIMATE CONTROL OF BUILDINGS AND DWELLINGS. THESE SYSTEMS CAN MANAGE THE PASSIVE SOLAR GAINS, VENTILATION, HEATING AND LIGHTING IN SUCH A WAY, THAT THEY MINIMIZE ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND PROVIDE GOOD THERMAL AND DAYLIGHTING CONDITIONS YEAR-ROUND. THIS WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY AN INTEGRATED CONTROL SYSTEM FOR WINDOW DEVICES (VENETIAN BLINDS, SHUTTERS, WINDOW OPENINGS, ETC.) AND THE TRADITIONAL HEATING AND LIGHTING SYSTEM.
DIFFERENT CONTROL SYSTEMS ARE DESIGNED FOR OFFICE BUILDINGS AND DWELLINGS. THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE TU DELFT IS FOCUSSED ON OFFICE BUILDINGS AND EMPHASIS IS PUT ON THE OPTIMAL INTEGRATION OF ALL ASPECTS, INCLUDING NATURAL VENTILATION. THE CONTRIBUTION OF ARMINES/CSTB IS FOCUSSED ON THE PASSIVE SOLAR GAINS IN HOUSES AND THE CONTRIBUTION OF NAPAC/ARMINES IS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CONTROL SYSTEM IN A "HOME DASHBOARD" FOR COMMUNICATION PURPOSES.
THE PAPER DESCRIBES CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES USED IN THE DESIGNS, SUCH AS OPTIMAL CONTROL STRATEGIES DERIVED FROM ADAPTIVE MODELS OF THE BUILDING COMPONENTS AND THE WEATHER. FURTHERMORE IT DESCRIBES THE COMPUTER SIMULATIONS THAT WILL BE USED FOR TESTING AND COMPARING THE VARIOUS CONTROL SYSTEMS.
