APPLICATION OF THE HERMES MODEL AND MAINTENANCE OF THE DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM.

Objective

- PROVISION OF AN OPERATIONAL ANALYTICAL TOOL (ECONOMY AND ENERGY) FOR THE COMMISSION
- CARRYING OUT OF A LARGE NUMBER OF STUDIES USEFUL IN ANALYSING COMMUNITY POLICIES
- ESTABLISHMENT OF A NETWORK OF EUROPEAN EXPERTS.
HERMES is an international project whereby the economy may be interpreted on a world wide scale. Such a system has need of a versatile, universally acceptable combination of both computing hardware and software.

The macrosectoral model Hermes, has the goal of interpreting world scale economy by sectors. This involves the management of 11 models containing between 1200 and 1500 equations for each European country, as well as the adjacent 13 COMET models for European countries, the United States and Japan. Each of these comprises over 150 equations. The European countries are represented by Hermes, with the alternative COMET available as a function of the former. We have found 5 zones under COMET specifications suitable for world wide adoption.

Software packages retained, have been selected according to 2 important criteria. These are that CROSSTALK and KERMIT are used for their universitality, and SIMPC 3270 is used for functional quality in a working environment based on TROLL and the IBM 370 architecture. KERMIT has proved to be the most interesting for our work in providing a compromise between functional properties, speed of execution and cost of equipment.
ECONOMICS:
CARRYING OUT OF IMPACT STUDIES IN A NATIONAL AND ABOVE ALL INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT, THE MAIN ORIGINAL FEATURE OF HERMES. THE ANALYST WILL ACQUIRE ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF THE WAY THE MODEL WORKS AND WILL TAKE PART IN PRODUCING ASSOCIATED COMPUTING TOOLS.

COMPUTING:
DEVELOPMENT OF A DATA-PROCESING SYSTEM SUITED TO OUR MODEL MANAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS IN A HETEROGENEOUS ENVIRONMENT: MICROCOMPUTERS AND MAINFRAME COMPUTERS;
SETTING-UP OF A DISTRIBUTED STRUCTURE BETWEEN THE CENTRAL TEAM AND ITS NATIONAL PARTNERS THROUGH A NETWORK.
