GEOTHERMAL STUDY OF THE SOUTHERN BORDER OF THE SOUTH PYRENEAN FORELAND BASIN.

Objectif

INCREASE OF GEOTHERMAL RESSOURCES AND RESERVES IN SPAIN.
The aim of the project was to determine the geothermal and hydrological characteristics of the Osona depression (Catalonia, Spain). A detailed geological cartography was followed by 36 geothermal gradient determinations, 63 complete water chemical analyses and 30 stable isotope (oxygen-18 and deuterium) analyses. The mean geothermal gradient has 38 mK/m with considerable variations. The scattering indicated a complex groundwater regime. Recharge and discharge zones have been identified in the north northeastern part and southern half of the depression respectively. A few sampled boreholes showed anomalously high gradients. Hydrochemical and isotopic analyses did not give indications for geothermal processes. These results were interpreted in terms of local deep water circulation and mixing of thermal fluids with shallow waters. Brines present in the area are believed to mask the resulting hydrochemistry. Any attempt to estimate the reservoir temperature has given unreliable results. Further analyses are being carried out to confirm or modify these results.
GEOTHERMAL AND HYDROGEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THE GEOTHERMAL ANOMALIES IN THE STUDY AREA.
