HANDBOOK FOR THE PLANNING OF DISTRICT HEATING SYSTEMS SUPPLIED FROM LOW ENTHALPY GEOTHERMAL SOURCES.

Obiettivo

THESE HANDBOOKS WILL MAKE AVAILABLE TO OTHER USERS THE BENEFITS OF MANY YEARS' EXPERIENCE IN THE DESIGN OF GEOTHERMAL AND OTHER DISTRICT HEATING SCHEMES.
The handbook develops the technical description and critical analysis of different possible configurations for an energy production station connected to district heating systems and supplied by low enthalpy geothermal energy.

The heat production units in a thermal station fed by geothermal energy for the supply of a district heating network may be the following:
primary heat exchangers between the geothermal fluid and the district heating water;
heat pumps;
heat recovery units of the heat pumps' prime movers;
boilers.

The configurations are firstly examined as far as thermodynamics and thermal balances are concerned; then, the simulation of the behaviour of these systems is carried out by means of the GEOTERM computer programme, leading to the technical and economic analysis of 96 cases and showing the effects of variation in the following basic data:
maximum thermal power of the system;
flow rate and the temperature of the geothermal fluid;
cost of the geothermal well;
operating temperature of the district heating network;
structure and flow chart of the production stations.

Themodynamic analysis is carried out of the different possible arrangements of heat pumps, presenting significant diagrams relevant to the energy efficiency indices assumed for the comparison.
THIS HANDBOOK WILL EXTEND AND COMPLEMENT THE HANDBOOKS WRITTEN UNDER THE LAST PROGRAMME (CONTRACT NO. EG-A2-054-UK) AND NOW BEING PREPARED FOR PUBLICATION. IT WILL PROVIDE A TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION AND A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT POSSIBLE CONFIGURATIONS FOR THE SURFACE NETWORK, AND WILL DEMONSTRATE OPTIMISATION AGAINST DIFFERENT CRITERIA.
THE WORK WILL ALSO TAKE INTO THE ACCOUNT THE OPTION OF USING ONE OR MORE HEAT PUMPS IN THE NETWORKS. THE CONTRACTOR'S EXISTING COMPUTER PROGRAMME 'GEOTEL' WILL BE USED TO SIMULATE THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS DURING ANNUAL OPERATION. THE RESULTS WILL BE PRESENTED IN THE FORM OF A HANDBOOK, TO BE PUBLISHED AS PART OF THE SERIES MENTIONED ABOVE, ENABLING POTENTIAL USERS TO APPLY THESE ANALYSES TO THEIR OWN SITUATIONS.
