DEVELOPMENT OF A PROCESS FOR THE REMOVAL OF SULPHUR AND NITROGEN OXIDES FROM FLUE GASES.

Obiettivo

THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO CONSOLIDATE AND EXTEND BY MEANS OF COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTS THE DATA SO FAR AVAILABLE ON THE USE OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE BROWN-COAL COKE (LIGNITE COKE) FOR THE REMOVAL OF SULPHUR AND NITROGEN OXIDES FROM FLUE GASES. IN THIS WAY, IT IS INTENTED TO OBTAIN RELIABLE DATA FOR THE DESIGN OF HALF- OR FULL-SIZE FLUE-GAS CLEANING PLANTS AND TO DETERMINE THE ECONOMICS OF THEIR OPERATION.
Our research programme has shown that brown coal coke is an efficient adsorber suitable for flue gas desulphurisation, in particular for removing small sulphur dioxide portions. The investigations in the field of nitric oxide reduction have demonstrated that it is feasible to attain nitric oxide conversion rates of up to 84% on the basis of brown coal coke. This rate can even be slightly increased by the use of partly demineralised coke.
PRELIMINARY TESTS IN THE LABORATORY AND ON SCALE MODELS HAVE SHOWN THAT STANDARD LIGNITE COKE HAS SIMILAR DESULPHURIZATION PROPERTIES TO HARD-COAL ACTIVATED COKE AND ALSO POSSESSES CATALYTIC PROPERTIES FOR THE REMOVAL OF NITROGEN OXIDES. THE PARTICULAR ATTRACTION FOR CONDUCTING A DETAILED STUDY OF THE SUITABILITY OF LIGNITE COKE IS THAT STANDARD LIGNITE COKE IS SUBSTANTIALLY CHEAPER THAN ACTIVATED COKE OBTAINED FROM HARD COAL. IF THE STUDIES PRODUCE A POSITIVE RESULT, A MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE ADSORBER-CATALYST MATERIAL WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR FLUE-GAS CLEANING WHICH WOULD ALSO OFFER SUBSTANTIAL TECHNICAL ADVANTAGES, SINCE IT WOULD OBVIATE THE NEED FOR REGENERATION OF DEACTIVATED COKE. ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY STUDIES CAN THEN BE USED TO DETERMINE POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS FOR THE MATERIAL.THERE WILL ALSO BE THE OPPORTUNITY OF DEVELOPING SIMPLE DISPOSAL TECHNIQUES ADAPTED TO THE LOWER-PRICE COKE. A POTENTIAL APPLICATION WOULD BE AS A HIGH-ENERGY MATERIAL IN THE CEMENT INDUSTRY AND IN SULPHUR OR SULPHURIC-ACID MANUFACTURE; DESORPTION OF THE SULPHURIC ACID WOULD ALSO BE POSSIBLE, IN ORDER TO USE THE DESULPHURIZED COKE AS A FUEL IN FURNACES OR FOR RECYCLING.
