TURBULENT COMBUSTION AND DIAGNOSTIC STANDARDIZATION OF CARS THERMOMETRY. DEVELOPMENT OF LIFS AT HIGH PRESSURE. STRAINED FLAME LIBRARY FOR TURBULENT COMBUSTION MODELLING.

THIS RESEARCH IS COORDINATED BY HARWELL COMBUSTION CENTRE IN THE FRAME OF THE EN3E008800 CONTRACT.

THE RESEARCH IS COMPOSED OF 3 PARTS :
A) STANDARDIZATION OF CAR THERMOMETRY AND SPECIES CONCENTRATION MEASUREMENT (J.WOLFRUM) AT 1 ATM PRESSURE AND TO ASSESS THE SOURCE OF ERRORS. DIFFERENT STANDARD BURNEN OR ISOTHERMAL TUBES FURNACE WILL BE USED. CROSS COMPARISON OF RESULTS OF DIFFERENT WORKING GROUP USING CONVENTIONAL MEASUREMENT (RAMAN, THERMOMETRY) WILL BE PERFORMED.
B) DEVELOPMENT OF LASER INDUCED FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY (LIFS) FOR HIGH PRESSURE COMBUSTION AT 1000 K (J.WOLFRUM). DEVELOPMENT OF QUANTITATIVE METHOD FOR APPLICATION OF LIFS.
C) STRAINED FLAME LIBRARY FOR TURBULENT COMBUSTION MODELLING (J.WARNATZ). COMPILATION OF A "LIBRARY" OF STRAINED LAMINAR PREMINED AND DIFFUSION FLAME PROPERTIES TO USED IN THE TESTING OF "FLAMELET" MODELS OF TURBULENT COMBUSTION. DETERMINATION OF EXTINCTION LIMITS FOR STRAINED FLAME COMPARISON WITH EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS.

A) MEASUREMENT WITH CARS, IN USED CARS CONFIGURATION, IN A COUNTER FLOW DIFFUSION FLAME AT ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE AND COMPARISON WITH CALCULATIONS IN WHICH THE CORRESPONDING EQUATION FOR CUTHALPY MOMENTUM AND CHEMICAL SPECIES ARE SOLVED.
THE PROGRAMME PROCEED IN 3 STAGES :
1. TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT WITH CARS IN ISOTHERMAL SAMPLING.
2. SAME MEASUREMENT AS STAGE 1 WITH OTHER STANDARD BURNER CONFIGURATION AND COMPARISON WITH RESULTS FROM OTHER LABORATORIES.
3. MEASUREMENTS SPECIES CONCENTRATION N2 - O2 - CO - H2O - CH4.

B) LIFS AT HIGH PRESSURE PROCEED IN 3 STAGES :
1. IN A HIGH PRESSURE CELL, AT ROOM TEMPERATURE, PRODUCTION BY LASER PHOTOLYSIS OF OH RADICALS AND DETECTION OF OH BY LIFS. DETERMINATION OF DETECTION LIMITS.
2. MEASUREMENT OF RADIATIVE LIFE TIME AND COMPARISON OF RESULTS OBTAINED BY CALCULATIONS USING QUENCHING COEFFICIENTS FROM LOWER PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS.
3. EXTENSION TO TEMPERATURE UP TO 1000 K AND INVESTIGATION OF 02 MOLECULES BY LIFS.

C) BASIC PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL DATA WILL BE USED AS INPUT TO THE DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS DESCRIBING THE REACTOR FLOW SYSTEM, SO AS TO COMPUTE "STRAINED" FLAME PROPERTIES. THE EFFORTS WILL BE SHARED BETWEEN LEEDS UNIVERSITY AND THE CONTRACTOR.
THE WORK PROCEED IN 3 STAGES :
1. UTILIZATION OF COMPUTER CODE DEVELOPED BY LEEDS AND HEIDELBERG FOR CALCULATION OF STRAINED FLAME OF PREMISED AND THE DIFFUSION FLAME.
2. WITH CALCULATED FLAME PROPERTIES AN INITIAL LIBRARY WILL BE ASSEMBLED. PRECISE WORK PROGRAMME WILL BE DISCUSSED WITH COMBUSTION EXPERIMENTALIST AND MODELLERS AT CAMBRIDGE, MARSEILLE, POITIER AND LEEDS UNIVERSITIES.
3. TEST OF THE STRAINED FLAME LIBRARIES IN PERFORMING TURBULENT FLAME SIMULATION. COMPARISON WITH EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS WILL SHOW DEFICIENCES OF THE CHEMISTRY NEEDING FURTHER CONSIDERATION.
