ADVANCED BATTERY DEVELOPMENT SOLID STATE LITHIUM RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES.

THE INFORMATION GAINED WILL BE RELEVANT TO FUTURE BATTERY SCALE-UP FOR BOTH VEHICLE TRACTION AND ALSO OTHER APPLICATIONS WHERE SMALLER BATTERIES ARE REQUIRED.
A number of aspects relevant to the scaleup of all solid state polymeric electrolyte, rechargeable lithium batteries have been studied. A nominal 1.7 Ahour cell has been fabricated and cycled at 120 C. At the 17 hour discharge rate, the initial cathode utilisation, between voltage limits of 2.0 and 2.9 volts, is 70% theoretical, falling to 20% after 50 cycles. The controlled production of the cathode material, vanadium oxide (V6O13), has been studied in detail. 1-2 kg batches of pure material have been produced using a technique which may be utilised on an industrial scale.
THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PHASE IS TO CONTINUE THE TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT WORK PURSUED WITHIN THE ANGLO-DANISH BATTERY PROJECT. THE AIM IS TO DEVELOP A METHOD OF CONTINUOUS FABRICATION OF AN ELECTRODE/ELECTROLYTE SANDWICH FOR BATTERY MODULES WHICH ENABLES IMPROVEMENTS ON PERFORMANCE ESSENTIAL FOR SCALE-UP OF PRESENT LABORATORY CELLS. THESE IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDING NOVEL BIPOLAR MULTI-CELL DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AIM AT A PROVISION OF GREATER INCENTIVE TO INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZATION TO SUPPORT AND PARTICIPATE IN A FUTURE SCALE-UP-PROGRAMME.
