IMPLEMENTATION AT LOW TEMPERATURE OF PHYSICAL SOLVENTS FOR THE PROCESSING OF NATURAL GAS.

Objetivo

THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT IS TO SELECT AND STUDY PHYSICAL SOLVENTS WHICH WILL BE IMPLEMENTED AT LOW TEMPERATURE TO PROCESS NATURAL GAS. THESE SOLVENTS WILL ALSO MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO REALISE SIMULTANEOUSLY IN A SINGLE STEP THE DEACIDIZATION, THE DEHYDRATION AND THE EXTRACTION OF NATURAL GAS LIQUIDS BY COOLING THE GAS IN CONTACT WITH THE SOLVENT.
The project selected and studied physical solvents which will be implemented at low temperature to process natural gas. These solvents will also make it possible to realize simultaneously in a single step the sweetening, the dehydration and the extraction of natural gas liquids by cooling the gas in contact with the solvent. A literature survey of equilibrium properties of possible candidates such as methanol, dimethylformamide, N-formylmorpholine and N-methylpyrrolidone with light hydrocarbons and/or acid gases was complemented by experimental measurements of fluid phase involving equilibria hydrate conditions.

After an extensive literature survey and preliminary measurements of hydrate formation and Henry constants, the heavy solvents were discarded in the view of the many advantages of methanol; best antihydrate capacity, lowest price and easy recovery by raw gas stripping.
Extensive measurements of equilibrium properties for mixtures of water, methanol and hydrocarbons showed that lossses of methanol in the treated gas and in the condensed liquid petroleum gas (LPG) were easily tractable, thus making the integrated process economically viable. The acid gases versus hydrocarbons selectivity of water methanol mixtures also proved sufficient for the sweetening part of the process.
The modelling of measured specific and equilibrium properties proved very difficult, and though many progress were accomplished in the scope of this project, no fully satisfactory model has been found yet. Some work is still done in this field.
THE PROJECT CONSISTS IN COLLECTING THERMODYNAMIC AND PHYSICO-CHEMICAL DATA REQUIRED TO IMPLEMENT SOLVENTS AT LOW TEMPERATURE AND THUS TO SET UP MODELLING SHOWING THE BALANCES LIKELY TO OCCUR BETWEEN THE SELECTED SOLVENTS AND THE NATURAL GAS. THE GOOD RELIABILITY OF THE MODEL PASSES BY THE CONFRONTATION WITH EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OF LOW TEMPERATURE EQUILIBRIA IN A DEVICE WITH SAMPLES TO BE MADE. THEREFORE THE PROJECT COMPRISES FIVE PHASES:

1. RESEARCH OF SOLVENTS

2. STUDY OF THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES

3. STUDY OF SPECIFIC PROPERTIES

4. MODELLING

5. OPTIMISATION OF SOLVENT CHOICE.
