INVESTIGATION INTO THE PROCESSING OF JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE

THE CONTRACTOR'S MULTI-PURPOSE SYSTEM OF HYDROLYSIS OF AGRICULTURAL BIOMASS, WHICH IS BASED ON ENZYMATIC HYDROLYSIS, WILL BE COMPARED WITH THE TECHNOLOGY OF ACID HYDROLYSIS, DEVELOPED ON LABORATORY SCALE BY CIEMAT-MADRID. THE LATTER HAS WORKED WITH JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE AS FEEDSTOCK WHILE THE CONTRACTOR HAS NOT. THE RESULTS OF THE PROCESS OF CIEMAT WILL BE ANALYSED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE RESEARCH GROUP OF CIEMAT-MADRID AND ERD (AND GROUPE SUCRE UNION), FRANCE IN ORDER TO JOINTLY ELABORATE OPERATIONAL PLANS FOR TEST RUNS IN THE PILOT PLANT. THE PERFORMANCE OF ALCOHOLIC FERMENTATION OF PRODUCTS FROM BOTH TECHNOLOGIES WILL BE COMPARED AND AN EVALUATION OF BY-PRODUCTS WILL BE DONE.

A FIVE-STAGE PROGRAMME WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO EVALUATE THE POSSIBILITIES OF JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE TRANSFORMATION.

1. EFFECT OF ENZYMATIC TECHNOLOGY (ERD) AND ACID TECHNOLOGY (CIEMAT) ON BEET LIQUEFACTION.

DURING THIS PHASE, THE MAIN SUBJECTS UNDER STUDY WILL BE THE KINETICS OF HYDROLYSIS OF CELL WALLS AND INULINE, FORMATION OF BY-PRODUCTS AND RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOUR OF WASHES.

2. STUDY OF THE FERMENTATION ON SUBSTRATES PRODUCED BY THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF HYDROLYSIS.

A FERMENTATION TRIAL AT PRE-PILOT STAGE WILL BE DONE TO STUDY KINETICS, YIELD AND FERMENTATION PROCESSES THAT COULD BE DEVELOPED AT THE INDUSTRIAL LEVEL.

3. EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF THE TECHNOLOGIES ON SEPARATION AND EXTRACTION PROBLEMS.

THIS PHASE IS ESSENTIAL TO CHOOSE THE KIND OF EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO ENSURE A GOOD RUNNING OF THE YEAST RECYCLING SYSTEM, THE DISTILLATION, THE CONCENTRATION AND THE DRYING OF THE BY-PRODUCTS.
