CATALYTIC STEAM GASIFICATION IN FLUIDISED BED OF BIOMASS

Objetivo

THE CONTRACTOR WILL STUDY FLUIDISED BED STEAM GASIFICATION OF BIOMASS.
Research has produced a second generation of results using commerical steam reforming catalysts for improving the steam gasification of biomass in fluidized bed. 2 Topsoee nickel catalysts, R-67 and RKS-1, have been used in a secondary bed in series with a continuously fed steam gasifier. Reforming temperatures between 690 and 780 C and catalyst particles sizes between 2.5 and 0.2 mm have been used in fixed and fluidized beds. In these conditions these catalysts are very active for tar and methane elimination. Tar conversions as high as 99.99 weight % have been achieved with catalyst space times of only 0.20 s. Methane is easily reduced below a 0.5 volume %. The life of the catalysts is nevertheless of only 5 to 7 hours. The tar income to the catalytic bed has to be lowered to reduce the coke formation on the catalyst.

The steam gasification of biomass fluidized bed has been improved by using cheap and catalytic stones placed in a secondary reactor downstream the gasifier. Dolomites, calcites and magnesites are used and compared. The temperature (800 to 900 C) of the secondary reactor, its space time (0.10 to 0.25 kg calcinated stone/kg biomass daf fed/h), the particle diameter of the stones (between 0.5 and 4.0 mm), the time on stream and the deactivation of the stone by coke, and the temperature of the gasifier freeboard (less than 500 to 750 C) are studied. Tar conversion higher than 99% was easily achieved.
THE STUDY WILL INCLUDE A SECONDARY CATALYTIC GASIFICATION - REFORMING OF THE CRUDE PRODUCT GAS.
THE EMPHASIS WILL BE ON THE SECONDARY CATALYTIC GASIFICATION - REFORMING STEP IN A LAB-SCALE FACILITY CONSISTING OF A STEAM GASIFIER CONNECTED TO A FLUID BED OR PACKED BED SECONDARY GASIFIER. THIS SECONDARY GASIFIER WILL CONTAIN METHANATION CATALYST, REFORMING CATALYST, CRACKING CATALYST AND OTHER TYPES THAT THE CONTRACTOR CONSIDERS FIT TO IMPROVE PRODUCT GAS QUALITY.

SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO CATALYST THAT CAN REDUCE THE TAR AND HIGHER HYDROCARBON FRACTION OF THE CRUDE STEAM GASIFICATION PRODUCT GAS. AS GASIFICATION AGENT FOR THE SECONDARY REFORMING STEP STEAM WILL BE USED BUT ALSO AIR - STEAM OR OXYGEN - STEAM MIXTURES WILL BE TRIED.

APART FROM THE SECONDARY GASIFICATION STEPS SOME ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE PRIMARY STEAM GASIFICATION PROCESS ITSELF IN THE AVAILABLE 0.15 M PILOT PLANT, AND TO COLD MODEL BED STUDIES ON SEGREGATION AS A FUNCTION OF PROCESS VARIABLES AND FEEDSTOCK - INERT FLUID BED SOLIDS PROPERTIES.
