COMPARISON OF SOLID STATE CONVENTIONAL SUBMERGED ALCOHOLIC FERMENTATION OF SUGAR CROPS IN AN INTEGRATED BIOMASS REFINERY PROCESS

THE PROJECT IS CONFINED TO FERMENTATION STUDIES OF HIGH-SUGAR CROPS, SUCH AS SWEET SORGHUM, SUGAR BEET AND FODDER BEET.
THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOLID STATE FERMENTATION SYSTEMS, BOTH BATCH AND CONTINUOUS, FOR SUGAR CROP FERMENTATION. CONVENTIONAL SUBMERGED FERMENTATION SYSTEMS WILL BE USED FOR COMPARATIVE PURPOSES ONLY. SINCE THE ECONOMICS OF BIOETHANOL PRODUCTION FROM PURPOSE GROWN CROPS DEPEND, TO A CERTAIN EXTENT, ON WHOLE CROP UTILISATION PROCEDURES AND ON MINIMISING NET ENERGY CONSUMPTION, THE PROJECT WILL ALSO EVALUATE THE NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF THE SOLID RESIDUE AND THE FEASIBILITY OF ENERGY RECOVERY BY BIOMETHANATION OF THE LIQUID WASTE STREAMS.

THE MAJOR OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF BOTH BATCH AND CONTINUOUS SOLID STATE FERMENTATION (SSF) SYSTEMS FOR BIOETHANOL PRODUCTION FROM SUGAR CROPS (SUGAR BEET; FODDER BEET; SWEET SORGHUM ETC). CONVENTIONAL SUBMERGED FERMENTATION (CSF) WILL BE USED FOR COMPARATIVE PURPOSES TO EVALUATE RELATIVE SUBSTRATE UTILISATION AND ETHANOL PRODUCTION EFFICIENCIES. INITIAL STUDIES ARE CURRENTLY FOCUSSED ON SELECTION OF A SUITABLE FERMENTING SPECIES AND ON EVALUATION OF A VARIETY OF BIOMASS PRETREATMENT PROCEDURES. STUDIES ARE UNDERWAY ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A BATCH SFF SYSTEM.. THE EFFECT OF VARYING THE MOISTURE CONTENT; THE REQUIREMENT, IF ANY, FOR NUTRIENT ADDITION; THE EFFECT OF PASTEURISATION OR INITIAL PH ADJUSTMENT AND THE DEGREE OF SUGAR OR ETHANOL TOXICITY ARE CURRENTLY BEING INVESTIGATED. WHEN THE BATCH SFF SYSTEM HAS BEEN FULLY EVALUATED, COMPARATIVE STUDIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT VERSUS CSF SYSTEMS, THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CONTINUOUS SFF PROCESS WILL BE INITIATED DURING THE LATTER HALF ON THE PROGRAMME. OPTIMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS WILL BE DETERMINED AND PROCEDURES FOR RECOVERY OF THE ETHANOL PRODUCT FROM THE EXITING SOLID MATERIAL WILL BE ASSESSED. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO INVESTIGATE THE NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF THE SOLID RESIDUES AND CARRY OUT LIMITED STUDIES ON THE FEASSIBILITY OF BIOMETHANATION OF THE LIQUID EFFLUENT.
