"QUALITY IMPROVEMENT OF PYROLITYC OILS FROM BIOMASS"

Objetivo



A PYROLYTIC OIL (PRODUCED AT THE SULMONA PILOT PLANT IN ITALY) AND MODIFIED SAMPLES (CATALYTICALLY HYDROGENATED AT THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF LOUVAIN IN BELGIUM) WERE CHARACTERIZED AS FAR AS COMPOSITION, CORROSIVENESS, AND BURNABILITY ARE CONCERNED.
OWING TO A VERY HIGH VISCOSITY OF THE RAW OIL, THE HYDROGENATED PRODUCTS ARE VERY FLUID. THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE OF THE DRASTIC REDUCTION IN THE POLAR OXYGENATED GROUPS. BOTH THE CHEMICAL (HIGHER CONTENT OF CARBON AND HYDROGEN) AND PHYSICAL (REMOVAL OF WATER) MODIFICATIONS INCREASE THE HEATING VALUE. SINCE THE ACIDITY BECOMES LOWER AND LOWER, THE CORROSIVENESS IS FAR REDUCED; MOREOVER, THE REMOVAL OF THE REACTIVE GROUPS BY HYDROGENATION WILL INCREASE THE STABILITY OF THE OIL. THE BURNABILITY WAS TESTED BY THE THERMOGRAVIMETRY AND DERIVATIVE THERMOGRAVIMETRY TECHNIQUES USING ATMOSPHERES OF N (GIVING EVAPORATION PROFILE) OF AIR (GIVING BURNING PROFILE).
THE HYDROGENATED OIL HAD MUCH MORE LIGHT COMPONENTS THAN THE RAW OIL (WATER FREE), AS APPEARS FROM THE FRACTION VAPORIZED AT TEMPERATURES LOWER THAN 400 CELSIUS DEGREES. THE HYDROGENATED OIL HAD ALSO MUCH LOWER RESIDUAL FRACTIONS. THEY WERE BURNT THROUGH A DISTINCT PEAK AT THE HIGHEST T C IN THE DTG BURNING PROFILE. CONSEQUENTLY, A BETTER BURNABILITY OF THE HYDROGENATED OIL OCCURED. THE QUALITY OF THE PYROLYTIC OIL APPREARED FAIRLY IMPROVED BY THE HYDROGENATION TREATMENT, ACCORDING TO ALL THE TESTS PERFORMED. FORECASTS FOR COMMERCIAL USE OF SUCH PRODUCTS APPEAR VERY ENCOURAGING IF HYDROTREATMENT PROCESS WILL BE ECONOMICALLY JUSTIFIED, AND HANDLING OF HYDROTREATED OIL WILL BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION AND PUBLIC HAZARD.
