OPTIMUM MATCHING OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES FUELLED BY MEANS OF GAS GENERATORS

Obiettivo



THE PRODUCTION OF GASEOUS FUELS FROM SOLID FUELS BY A GAS GENERATOR AND THE COMBUSTION OF THIS GAS IN AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE IS INVESTIGATED AND OPTIMIZED. THIS COMBINATION WAS USED DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR AND IS PRESENTLY FOUND IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY IS TO PREPARE TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS NECESSARY TO CONVERT CONVENTIONAL PETROL OR DIESEL ENGINES INTO ENGINES BURNING GENERATOR GAS WHICH HAS A HEATING VALUE OF ONLY 4000 - 5600 KJ/M3. THE "MOTOR/GAS GENERATOR" SYSTEM IS OPTIMIZED, WHILE DUE ALLOWANCE IS GIVEN TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS AND ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY.

THE EXPERIMENTAL STUDY COVERED THE COMBUSTION CHARACTERISTICS OF LEAN GASES, WHICH ARE STILL NOT CLEARLY KNOWN, IN THE CONDITIONS OF OPERATION OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES. ALSO THE BEHAVIOUR OF GRAVITY-FED GAS GENERATORS UNDER VARIOUS SETS OF CONDITIONS WAS ANALYSED.

GENERATOR GAS CAN BE FED TO SPARK IGNITION ENGINES (OF RECENT DESIGN) WITHOUT MODIFYING THEIR STRUCTURE. OPTIMAL POWER AND CONSUMPTION PERFORMANCES ARE OBTAINED WHEN THE AIR-GAS RATIO IS KEPT AT ITS STOICHIOMETRIC LEVEL (FOR ALL OPERATING RANGES) AND THE ENGINE IS FED BY THE MIXTURE AT ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE. IF THE GAS CONTAINS SUFFICIENT HYDROGEN, AN ADVANCE IGNITION TIMING CORRECTION WITH REGARD TO A PETROL ENGINE IS NOT REQUIRED.

THE USE OF AIR-STEAM GAS PROVIDES (AT THE SAME COMPRESSION RATIO) BETTER POWER AND EFFICIENCY LEVELS THAN THOSE OF GAS-AIR. FURTHERMORE, THE GASIFICATION EFFICIENCY OF AIR-STEAM GAS MIXTURES IS HIGHER THAN FOR GAS-AIR. THE OPTIMAL GAS GENERATOR-ENGINE SYSTEM IS THE ONE WITH AN ENGINE COMPRESSION RATIO OF ABOUT 11. ITS TOTAL EFFICIENCY IS ABOUT 25 % WHICH CORRESPONDS TO A CONSUMPTION OF LESS THAN 0.5 KG/KWH OF FUEL HAVING A CALORIFIC VALUE OF 30000 KJ/KG.

DIESEL ENGINES CAN BE FED WITH GENERATOR GAS WITHOUT MODIFYING THEIR STRUCTURE PROVIDED THEIR COMPRESSION RATIO IS NOT VERY HIGH. MODIFICATION OF A DIESEL ENGINE INTO A SPARK IGNITION ENGINE IS TO BE AVOIDED SINCE IT REQUIRES IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE COMPRESSION RATIO AND LEADS TOWARDS DETERIORATION OF THE PERFORMANCES DUE TO A REDUCTION OF THE EFFICIENCY. THE OPTIMAL SYSTEM IS ONE WITH A GAS-STEAM-AIR DIESEL ENGINE, HAVING A COMPRESSION RATIO OF ABOUT 15. AN OPTIMISED SYSTEM IS CHARACTERISED BY A MEAN PRESSURE OF 6.5 BARS AND AN EFFICIENCY OF 28 % CORRESPONDING TO A DIESEL OIL CONSUMPTION OF LESS THAN 0.03 KG/HKW OR OF A PROPORTIONAL CHAR COAL CONSUMPTION OF LESS THAN 0.4 KG/HKW.
