DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL MODELS OF COLD FLOW IN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES

FIVE CAR COMPANIES, BL, FIAT, PSA, RENAULT AND VOLVO ARE ASSOCIATED IN A COMMON VENTURE CALLED THE JOINT RESEARCH COMMITTEE (JRC) FORMED WITH THE PURPOSE OF PROMOTING CO-OPERATIVE RESEARCH IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY. THESE COMPANIES UNDERTOOK TO DEVELOP TOGETHER A COMPUTER PROGRAM WHICH COMPUTES THE VELOCITY AND TURBULENCE FIELDS DURING THE INDUCTION, COMPRESSION, EXPANSION AND EXHAUST STROKES OF AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE. THE PROGRAM WAS RESTRICTED TO COLD FLOW AND RELATIVELY SIMPLE BUT FULLY THREE-DIMENSIONAL CHAMBER GEOMETRIES. IT DESCRIBED THE TURBULENCE USING A K-EPSILON EFFECTIVE VISCOSITY MODEL.

THE PERFORMANCE OF THE COMPUTER PROGRAM WAS EVALUATED USING FLOW DATA OBTAINED BY LASER DOPPLER ANEMOMETRY MEASUREMENTS IN MOTORED ENGINES.

IT WAS WRITTEN IN PORTABLE "FORTRAN" AND DOCUMENTED TO A HIGH STANDARD. THE COMPLETED VERSION OF THE COMPUTER PROGRAM HAS BEEN SUPPLIED TO THE PARTICIPATING MEMBER COMPANIES OF THE JRC. THIS WILL ALLOW THEM TO TEST ITS APPLICATION TO VARIOUS ENGINE TYPES AND LATER TO USE IT IN SUPPORT OF DESIGN WORK FOR FUTURE ENGINES.

AS AN EXTENSION OF THIS WORK, THE JRC WOULD LIKE TO GENERALISE THE PROGRAM TO ALLOW FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF COMBUSTION CHAMBERS OF ARBITRARY SHAPE AND TO INCORPORATE THE EFFECTS OF COMBUSTION. THIS SHOULD PROVE TO BE A POWERFUL TOOL IN THE DESIGN OF LOW POLLUTION ENERGY EFFICIENT COMBUSTION UNITS.
