REDUCING ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN A WORKS MANUFACTURING HEAVY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

THE ACEC PREMISES IN CHARLEROI CONSIST OF 43 BUILDINGS SPREAD OVER 2 KM2; A MAJOR PART CONSISTS OF WORKSHOPS OF VARIOUS AGES, DESIGNS AND DIMENSIONS, HOUSING DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES. 25 BUILDINGS ARE PROVIDED WITH THEIR OWN BOILER OR HEATING SYSTEM, THE REMAINING ONES - AND AMONGST THEM THE LARGEST WORKSHOPS - ARE PROVIDED WITH AN ARRAY OF HEAT EXCHANGERS CONNECTED TO AN INTERNAL DISTRICT HEATING SYSTEM.

A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMME OF ACTION HAS BEEN FORMULATED TO REDUCE EXPENDITURE ON HEATING AND ON ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION. IT DEALS WITH SAVINGS ALREADY GAINED (10 % FROM 1979 TO 1981) OR EXPECTED AND COMPRISES THE FOLLOWING ITEMS :

- GOOD HOUSEKEEPING ACTIVITIES SUCH AS INSULATION AND HEATING CONTROL;

- ANALYSIS OF A PARTICULAR HEATING SYSTEM; EVALUATION OF ITS HEAT LOSSES, IMPROVEMENT OF ITS CONTROL SYSTEM;

- DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF A NEW MICRO-COMPUTER WHICH CONTROLS AND OPTIMISES THE ENTIRE HEATING SYSTEM FOR THE MAIN MANAGEMENT BUILDING. FUEL SAVINGS AMOUNTING TO 15 TO 30 % HAVE BEEN MEASURED. IN THE NEAR FUTURE, OTHER BUILDINGS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH THE SAME EQUIPMENT;

- DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPUTER PROGRAM TO CALCULATE THE DYNAMIC HEAT LOSSES OF BUILDINGS OF ANY KIND, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BUILDING COMPONENTS, RATE OF CHANGE OF AIR, EXPOSURE AND DEGREE-DAYS. MORE ACCURATE RESULTS ARE EXPECTED FROM A SECOND, MORE COMPLEX VERSION OF THE PROGRAM, WHICH WOULD INCLUDE A BETTER ASSESSMENT OF THE RATE OF AIR RENEWAL AND ADDITIONAL INPUT DATA SUCH AS THERMAL INERTIA AND UNSTEADY CONDITIONS;

- STUDY OF THE ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION CHARACTERISTICS OF A BUILDING AND REDUCTION OF EXPENDITURE BY MANAGEMENT OF THE LIGHTING SYSTEM;

- DEVELOPMENT OF A MICROPROCESSOR SYSTEM WHICH REDUCED THE POWER PEAKS OF AN ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION COMPLEX;

- CALCULATIONS WITH RESPECT TO THE CENTRAL BOILER OF THE DISTRICT HEATING SYSTEM AND ASSOCIATED HOT-WATER PIPING. THE STUDY INDICATED A POSSIBLE REDUCTION IN THE HEAT LOSSES FROM THE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM.
