USE OF THE SOIL AS A HEAT SOURCE AND HEAT STORAGE MEDIUM FOR HEAT PUMPS; EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF A COMPLETE HEAT PUMP SYSTEM IN A ONE FAMILY HOUSE

A HOUSE OF 148 M2 WAS HEATED WITH A 5,5 KW ELECTRICAL HEAT PUMP DELIVERING HEAT OF 35 DEGREES C TO A FLOW HEATING SYSTEM. WASTE HEAT WAS EXTRACTED FROM THE SOIL WITH A VERTICAL HEAT EXCHANGER SYSTEM CONSISTING OF 7 TUBES OF 15 M LONG WITH A CIRCULATION FLUID (E.G. WATER/GLYCOL). THE HEAT EXTRACTION RATE VARIED FROM 40 TO 60 W/M (IN WATER SATURATED SAND WHICH IS MOST COMMON IN THE NETHERLANDS). TEMPERATURE RECOVERY DURING THE SUMMER WAS NOT COMPLETE AT DEPTHS BETWEEN 3 AND 15 M. THE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE DELTA T COULD BE AS MUCH AS 1,5 DEGREES K. THE SEASONALLY AVERAGED COP VALUE WAS 3,23.

SIX DIFFERENT DRILLING METHODS HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED. THE WATERJETTING WITH A LANCE WITHOUT CASING (TURNED OUT TO BE THE CHEAPEST METHOD, BUT CAN ONLY BE USED FOR HOLES WITH A DEPTH UP TO 15 M WHEN SOIL CONSISTS OF SAND WITH THIS TECHNIQUE). THE INSTALLATION COST VARIES FROM 7 ECU/M HOLE FOR ONE HOUSE TO 2 ECU FOR 35 HOUSES. UNDER FAVORABLE CONDITIONS (50 W/M AND FOR A LARGE NUMBER OF HOUSES) THE HEAT EXCHANGE FOR THIS INSTALLATION WOULD COST 210 ECU.

A COMPUTER SIMULATION MODEL WAS MADE AND THEORETICAL VALUES HAVE BEEN COMPARED WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA. AGREEMENT WAS SATISFACTORY AND THE MODEL MAY WELL BE USED FOR PREDICTING HEAT EXTRACTION, SOIL TEMPERATURES, ETC. FOR VERTICAL HEAT EXCHANGERS.
