Cel THE FACT THAT OIL IN THE COMPRESSOR DISSOLVES IN THE REFRIGERANT, RESULTS IN A LESS EFFICIENT OPERATION OF THE HEAT PUMPS. THIS PROBLEM WAS STUDIED BY THE NEW UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER. THE FRACTION OF OIL DISSOLVED IN THE REFRIGERANT VARIES STRONGLY AND DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF COMPRESSOR (E.G. IN A SLIDING VANE COMPRESSOR, OFTEN USED IN INDUSTRIAL HEAT PUMPS, 8 - 15 %, RECIPROCATING COMPRESSOR, OFTEN USED IN DOMESTIC HEAT PUMPS, 1 - 2 %). THE PRINCIPLE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EXPERIMENTAL PHASE HAS BEEN THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN EXTENSIVELY INSTRUMENTED TEST RIG WITH COMPUTER BASED DATA COLLECTION, WHICH ALLOWS THE CONDITIONS OF THE HEAT PUMPS TO BE VARIED OVER A CONSIDERABLE RANGE AND ALLOWS OIL INJECTION IN AND OIL REMOVAL FROM THE REFRIGERANT. A MUCH BETTER INSIGHT HAS BEEN OBTAINED IN THE INFLUENCE OF LUBRICATING OIL IN THE HEAT PUMP SYSTEM. THE TWO CONCLUSIONS THAT CAN BE DRAWN FROM THIS SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS ARE THAT OIL SHOULD BE EXCLUDED FROM REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS WHEREVER POSSIBLE, AND THAT SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN PERFORMANCE CAN BE ACHIEVED IF THIS IS DONE AND IF THE SUPERHEAT SETTINGS ARE REDUCED SUBSTANTIALLY FROM THOSE CURRENTLY USED. INDEED, UNDER THE REPORTED CONDITIONS, THE EVAPORATOR PERFORMANCE COULD BE IMPROVED BY ABOUT 30 % AND THE COPC BY ABOUT 20 % BY REDUCING THE SUPERHEAT SETTING FROM THE CONVENTIONAL 7 TO 8 DEGREES C TO 0 + 5 DEGREES C. IT IS NOTABLE THAT THIS IMPROVEMENT IN PERFORMANCE INVOLVES NO CHANGES IN EQUIPMENT OTHER THAN THAT REQUIRED TO IMPROVE THE LEVEL OF EVAPORATOR CONTROL. THE PRESENTLY OBTAINED RESULTS WILL BE USEFUL FOR THE DESIGN OF FUTURE HEAT PUMPS.
