GENETIC CHANGES IN MAMMALIAN CELLS FOLLOWING HEAVY ION IRRADIATION

Cel

Radiation induced delays in cell cycle progression have been measured for alpha particles and heavy ion beams using asynchronous cell populations. These measurements, using cytofluorometric methods, show partially contradictory results and are difficult to correlate with measurements of cell cycle delay using the mitotic index or PLM methods. An interpretation of these experiments is difficult because they were performed with asynchronous cell populations. In this case, the measured deoxyribonuceic acid (DNA) spectra were only sensitive to relative changes within the population of the cell cycle phases. A simultaneous slowing down of all cells in all phases does not change the relative proportion of cells in different phases and therefore cannot be detected using this method.
